England thrash Pakistan by innings & 47 runs in Multan test & lead series 1-0

Pakistan suffered a defeat despite an impressive first innings performance. Three of their batters scored centuries, with Shan Masood and company posting a total of 556 runs. However, that was not enough to secure victory. Pakistan’s six bowlers conceded over 100 runs each, leading to an innings defeat against England. The English team, powered by Joe Root and Harry Brook, clinched an easy victory. This marked the first time in Test cricket history that a team scoring over 500 runs in the first innings lost by an innings.

The match was held in Multan, the first Test of the series between England and Pakistan. The pitch had already sparked discussions, as it offered no assistance to the bowlers. On such a wicket, Pakistan’s opener Abdullah Shafique (102), captain Shan Masood (151), and Salman Agha (104) all scored centuries, leading Pakistan to 556 runs.

In response, England posted an even bigger total. Scoring at nearly 5.5 runs per over, they declared at 823 runs in 150 overs. Joe Root contributed a massive 262, while Harry Brook scored 317. Ben Duckett played an important innings of 84, and opener Zak Crawley added 78. Pakistan’s six bowlers all conceded more than 100 runs each.

It was initially thought that the match would end in a draw. However, England’s bowlers worked wonders in the last two days. On a pitch that had been difficult for taking wickets in the first three days, Jack Leach and his teammates bowled Pakistan out for 220. On the last day Salman Agha reached 63 before getting lbw to Leach , while Aamer Jamal contributed an unbeaten  55. The rest of the batting lineup failed to make an impact as Afridi (10) was brilliantly caught & bowled by Leach and Naseem Shah stumped , leading Pakistan to lose by an innings and 47 runs in the first Test. Leach took four wickets, Brydon Carse and Gus Atkinson took two each, and Chris Woakes claimed one. Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed, who had been hospitalized due to illness, did not come out to bat.
