Bowlers shine as India W beat NZW in 1st ODI

Led by left-arm spinner Radha Yadav's brilliant performance, the Indian bowlers helped secure a 59-run victory over New Zealand in the first women's One Day International (ODI) cricket match on Thursday, giving India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Chasing a target of 228, New Zealand's team collapsed for 168 in 40.4 overs under pressure from Radha's 3 wickets for 35 runs and pace bowler Saima Thakor’s 2 wickets for 26 runs.

Deepti Sharma (1 wicket for 35 runs) and Arundhati Reddy (1 wicket for 21 runs) also contributed with a wicket each. Earlier, the Kerr sisters, Amelia and Jess, took seven wickets between them to restrict India to 227 in 44.3 overs. Leg-spinner Amelia claimed 4 wickets for 42 runs, while fast bowler Jess grabbed 3 wickets for 49 runs, regularly breaking India's batting momentum.

Off-spinner Eden Carson also took 2 wickets for 42 runs. Deepti Sharma (41), debutant Tejal Hasabnis (42), Shafali Verma (33), Yastika Bhatia (37), and Jemimah Rodrigues (35) all started well but failed to convert their innings into big scores.

New Zealand, in their chase, lost their first wicket in the second over when Suzie Bates (01) was caught by wicketkeeper Yastika Bhatia off Saima’s second ball on debut. Maddie was run out just two balls later, leaving New Zealand at 128 for six, after which the Indian bowlers tightened their grip, ensuring victory.

Earlier, Indian batters too failed to capitalize on their good starts. Tejal Hasabnis, who looked promising, will be disappointed after falling to Amelia Kerr. She attempted an aggressive shot off Amelia’s delivery, only to be stumped by wicketkeeper Isabella Gaze.
