WT20I WC : England ride on Wyatt , Sciver stand to outplay South African women

After a brilliant bowling performance by Sophie Ecclestone (2 wickets for 15 runs), followed by a solid partnership of 64 runs from 55 balls between Natalie Sciver-Brunt (unbeaten 48) and opener Danielle Wyatt (43), England secured their second consecutive victory in the Women's T20 World Cup Group B by defeating South Africa by seven wickets on Monday. With this win, along with their earlier triumph over Bangladesh, England strengthened their claim for a semifinal spot.

After restricting South Africa to 124/6, England chased the target with four balls remaining, finishing at 127/3. Sciver-Brunt played an aggressive knock, scoring 48* off 36 balls with six boundaries, preventing the South African bowlers from taking control. Wyatt provided valuable support, contributing 43 off 43 balls, including four boundaries. For South Africa, Marizanne Kapp, N. Mlaba, and Nadine de Klerk claimed one wicket each.

Earlier, Kapp had also contributed with the bat, scoring a quick 26 off 17 balls. Captain Laura Wolvaardt top-scored for South Africa with 42 off 39 balls, while Anneke Bosch added an unbeaten 20 off 11 balls. England's decision to field four spinners, as they did in the previous match, proved effective again. Player of the Match Ecclestone took two wickets, while Linsey Smith, Charlie Dean, and Sarah Glenn took one wicket each.

Chasing the target, England's batters initially struggled to score freely. Maia Bouchier played out a maiden over from Kapp before hitting a boundary in her second over. At the other end, Wyatt struck a four off Ayabonga Khaka.

Kapp bowled another maiden in the fifth over, dismissing Bouchier LBW for a slow 8 off 20 balls. Alice Capsey reduced the pressure by hitting two boundaries off Chloe Tryon in the sixth over. England reached 28/1 at the end of the powerplay.

Capsey continued her aggressive approach, hitting another four in the eighth over. However, she was dismissed in the next over after de Klerk took a brilliant return catch, ending her innings of 19 off 16 balls. Sciver-Brunt showed confidence with a well-placed boundary off Khaka, supported by Wyatt, who struck another four off Sune Luus in the 13th over. Sciver-Brunt then attacked Kapp, who had been economical in her first three overs, with two more boundaries, bringing the required run rate closer to six.

Wyatt, eager to finish the match, was stumped in the 18th over after hitting a four off Mlaba. However, Sciver-Brunt sealed the victory with consecutive boundaries off de Klerk and Khaka, securing England’s win.
