Santner (7/53) destroys Indian 1st innings , New Zealand lead by 301 in 2nd test
India is caught in a whirlwind in Pune! Chasing New Zealand's first innings score of 259, India managed only 156 runs. Trailing by 103 runs, India needed a ‘magical’ bowling spell to pull them back into the game. However, unlike New Zealand's Santner, who showcased such magic with the ball, India’s bowlers couldn’t replicate that magic on Day 2. As a result, by the end of the second day of the Pune Test (IND vs NZ 2nd Test), India is on the brink of an inevitable defeat. Without a significant miracle, saving this Test will be a daunting task for Rohit and his team.
In response to New Zealand's 259, India lost captain Rohit Sharma’s wicket on the first day itself. On Friday, the second day, India lost six batters in a single session, all falling prey to spin. The main tormentor was Mitchell Santner, an unassuming left-arm spinner, who claimed seven wickets. Consequently, Team India was bowled out for just 156 in the first innings. Apart from Jaiswal (30), Gill (30), and Jadeja (38), none of the Indian batters could deliver any notable performance.
Early in the morning Gill looked in good touch till he was lbw to Santner for 30 which brought Virat Kohli in the crease. The former captain tried to hit Santner off his line in a hoick towards leg but missed it completely to be bowled for 1 . Pant came in and lived dangerously for his 18 before he too tried a hoick like Kohli & perished . Jaiswal who was trying to steady the innings and himself was playing cautiously till he poked outside off to Phillips and was snapped up at 1st slip for 30.
Sarfraz played an airy shot towards midoff to perish on 11 . Later Jadeja offered some resistance to score 38 . Sundar (18*) remained not out as he ran out of partners
When New Zealand came to bat in the second innings, the pitch seemed to transform. The same pitch that appeared challenging earlier became manageable for Kiwi captain Tom Latham, who scored a comfortable 86 runs. He was well-supported by Young (23) and Blundell who is not out on 30 . Conway (17) was lbw to Sundar . Mitchell (18) was caught off a skier off Sundar while Young was lbw to Ashwin. Ravindra(9) was out cheaply to Sundar .
At the end of the day, New Zealand was comfortably placed at 198/5, leading by 301 runs.
In India’s bowling lineup, Washington Sundar appeared the most effective, taking four wickets in this innings, while Ashwin managed one. Considering India was bowled out for 156 in their first innings on this pitch, chasing this massive total in the fourth innings would indeed require a miracle from Team India.
