Wimbledon '25: Sabalenka Survives Major Scare, Alcaraz, Fritz to face in Semis
One of the biggest potential upsets of this year’s Wimbledon almost unfolded on Tuesday, as top seed Aryna Sabalenka came dangerously close to an early exit in the women’s singles quarterfinals. Facing Germany’s unseeded Laura Siegemund, Sabalenka ultimately prevailed through experience and grit, winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The match didn’t start well for Sabalenka, who looked unsettled and committed several unforced errors, costing her the first set 4-6. At that stage, it looked like Siegemund might pull off the biggest shock of the tournament. But Sabalenka gradually regained her rhythm, winning the second set comfortably at 6-2. In the decider, Siegemund once again challenged strongly and even led 4-3 at one point. However, Sabalenka broke serve at a crucial moment and reeled off three straight games to clinch the match in 2 hours and 54 minutes, booking her place in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, in the men’s singles, defending champion and second seed Carlos Alcaraz put in a commanding performance to reach the semifinals. He defeated Britain’s Cameron Norrie in straight sets — 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 — in just 1 hour and 39 minutes on Centre Court. The 22-year-old Spaniard dominated from the start, delivering multiple aces and capitalizing on break point opportunities to outclass the local hopeful.
In another women’s quarterfinal, 13th seed Amanda Anisimova of the USA faced unseeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Anisimova stormed through the first set 6-1. The second set, however, was a fierce contest that led to a tiebreak. After a back-and-forth battle, Anisimova edged the tiebreak 11-9 to seal a straight-sets victory in 1 hour and 39 minutes — 6-1, 7-6 (11-9).
On the men's side, fifth seed Taylor Fritz also advanced to the semifinals after a tough four-set battle against 17th seed Karen Khachanov. Fritz won the first two sets 6-3, 6-4, but stumbled in the third, losing it 1-6. The fourth set was fiercely contested and went to a tiebreak, which Fritz won 7-4. The final match score: 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) in 2 hours and 36 minutes.
