Wiaan Mulder on cusp of breaking Lara's 400* world record declares innings 33 short !!

South African captain Wiaan Mulder stunned the cricketing world by declaring the innings while unbeaten on 367 — just 34 runs short of breaking Brian Lara’s iconic 400-run record. With Zimbabwe struggling and three full days remaining in the match, many expected Mulder to push for the record. Instead, the declaration came abruptly at lunch on Day 3, leaving fans and pundits alike baffled.

Zimbabwe had won the toss and opted to bowl first. South Africa, already leading the two-Test series 1–0, were without regular captain Temba Bavuma, who was sidelined due to injury following their World Test Championship triumph. In his place, Mulder took charge and led from the front, guiding the team past early setbacks and building a mammoth total.

On the second day, Mulder crossed the 300-run mark, reaching the milestone in just 297 balls — the second-fastest triple century in Test history. Only Virender Sehwag’s 278-ball triple ton in 2008 was faster. Mulder also became just the second South African after Hashim Amla (311* vs England, 2012) to score a triple century in Tests. Remarkably, he achieved the feat on his captaincy debut — a rare and historic accomplishment.

But the declaration at 626 for 5, with Mulder unbeaten on 367, triggered widespread surprise. The decision reportedly came from Mulder himself. With a visibly weak Zimbabwean side, and time in hand, many believe he could have easily reached — or even surpassed — Lara’s 400*, or overtaken Matthew Hayden’s 380 to register one of the highest Test scores of all time. For now, Mulder’s 367 remains the fifth-highest individual score in Test history, just behind Mahela Jayawardene.

Some suggest Mulder prioritized the team’s victory over personal glory. Others believe the decision might have been a tribute to Lara, a gesture of respect. But Lara wasn’t the only player ahead of him — and the opportunity to etch his name at the very top was within reach. Unless Mulder breaks his silence, the reasoning behind this unexpected call remains a mystery.
