Divya Deshmukh Creates History for India by Reaching Women's Chess World Cup Final

19-year-old Divya Deshmukh has made history by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the final of the Women's Chess World Cup. In a sensational semifinal performance, she defeated former world champion Tan Zhongyi of China, currently ranked World No. 4.

This victory is undoubtedly the biggest of Divya’s career so far. After drawing the first leg of the semifinal on Tuesday—where she played with the black pieces—Divya struck decisively on Wednesday with the white pieces, winning the second leg and clinching the match 1.5-0.5.

Using the Alapin Sicilian Defense strategy, Divya outmaneuvered her opponent in a tense and evenly poised encounter. Both players had chances to win, but the young Indian kept her composure under pressure to seal the game and book her place in the final.

Divya has been in phenomenal form throughout the tournament. In the fourth round, she defeated the second seed, Zhu Jiner of China. She then overcame fellow Indian and experienced Grandmaster Dronavalli Harika in a dramatic quarterfinal that went into tiebreaks.

With this string of high-profile victories, Divya Deshmukh has announced herself as a force to be reckoned with on the global chess stage.
