Deepti Sharma powers India to a historic win in 1st ODI vs England

After wrapping up a fiercely contested five-match T20I series, the India and England women’s teams continued their white-ball rivalry with the first ODI of the three-match series at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on July 16. England won the toss and elected to bat first, but despite some strong middle-order resistance, it was India who emerged victorious, registering their highest successful ODI run chase on English soil — and their second-highest overall.

England’s innings got off to a shaky start. Openers Tammy Beaumont (5) and Amy Jones (1) were dismissed cheaply by Goud's pace , putting the hosts under early pressure. Emma Lamb attempted to steady the innings but was dismissed after a modest 39-run contribution. Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt added some stability, scoring 41 off 52 balls.

However, it was the middle-order pairing of Sophia Dunkley and Alice Davidson-Richards who revived England’s innings. Dunkley led the scoring with a well-crafted 83 off 92 balls, while Davidson-Richards chipped in with a valuable 53 off 73 deliveries. Their efforts powered England to a competitive total of 258 runs in 50 overs.

India’s bowling attack showed good discipline. Kranti Goud and Sneh Rana emerged as the top wicket-takers with two wickets each, while Amanjot Kaur and Shree Charani contributed with one wicket apiece.

Deepti Sharma Anchors India's Record Chase

Chasing 259 for victory, India got off to a solid start. Openers Pratika Rawal (36) and Smriti Mandhana (28) laid the foundation with a steady opening stand. Harman got lbw for 17 .  Harleen Deol (27) and Jemimah Rodrigues (48 off 54 balls) added crucial runs in the middle overs to keep India in the hunt. However Harleen was run out in a poor fashion not grounding her bat inside the crease and briefly let the advantage slip before Jemima & Deepti settled down.

The defining moment of the innings came with the arrival of Deepti Sharma. The experienced all-rounder played a composed and intelligent knock, scoring a superb match-winning 62 runs off 64 deliveries. Her calm presence and timely boundaries proved decisive as India chased down the target in 48.2 overs, sealing a memorable four-wicket victory.

This win marks a significant milestone for India, registering their highest successful ODI chase in England and underlining their growing confidence in overseas conditions.
