Gill century powers India to 310/5 vs England in 2nd test day one
The opening day of the second Test between England and India at Edgbaston proved to be a gripping contest. Thanks to a brilliant unbeaten century by Indian skipper Shubman Gill and a solid knock from Yashasvi Jaiswal, India finished the day in a decent position but maybe with less batting to follow . England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bowl first, but the Indian batters countered his strategy with determination and flair. By stumps, Team India had posted an impressive 310 runs for the loss of 5 wickets.
The day undeniably belonged to Shubman Gill. The young captain led from the front, scoring an unbeaten 114 off 216 balls, laced with 12 boundaries. It was Gill’s second century of the series, following his 147-run knock in the first innings of the Leeds Test. His calm and composed innings anchored India’s batting and ensured a solid foundation going into Day 2.
Yashasvi Jaiswal once again provided India with a strong start. Although he narrowly missed out on a century, he scored an impressive 87 off 107 deliveries, hitting 13 boundaries. His attacking strokeplay set the tone early in the innings.
However, not all Indian batters capitalized on their starts. KL Rahul struggled, scoring just 2 runs from 26 balls before falling early being bowled by Woakes , leaving India at 15 for 1. Karun Nair, despite a promising start, was dismissed for 31 by an unplayable snorter from Carse . Rishabh Pant showed intent but couldn’t convert his start into a big score, departing for 25 hitting Bashir straight to long on . Debutant Nitish Reddy failed to make an impact, scoring just 1 run before being dismissed leaving an incoming ball from Woakes and was bowled .
Chris Woakes Shines with the Ball
Among England's bowlers, Chris Woakes stood out with a disciplined performance. He bowled 21 overs and claimed 2 wickets for 59 runs, dismissing KL Rahul and Nitish Reddy. Captain Ben Stokes managed to break the dangerous opening stand by removing Jaiswal caught behind off a slash . Brydon Carse and Shoaib Bashir chipped in with a wicket each.
As Day 2 looms, India will aim to build on their strong position and post a massive total. England, on the other hand, will look to strike early and restrict India’s progress. The stage is set for another exciting day of Test cricket.
