Introduction

Situated in the ancient city of Cuttack, the Maa Cuttack Chandi Temple is a sacred shrine dedicated to Goddess Chandi, a fierce and benevolent incarnation of Durga. The temple holds immense spiritual significance for the people of Odisha, particularly during Durga Puja and Kali Puja. Revered as the “Living Goddess of Cuttack”, Maa Chandi is believed to be the protector deity of the city.

History in Detail

  • The origin of the temple dates back to the 18th century, though the site’s sanctity is believed to be far older.

  • As per local legend, Late Hansa Panda, a purohit (priest), discovered the idol of Goddess Chandi while digging near a trench during the Gajapati rule. He had a vision of the goddess in his dream, which led him to excavate the sacred site.

  • The temple was soon constructed at the same location, and Hansa Panda's family was entrusted with its priestly duties — a tradition that continues even today.

  • Over time, the temple became the center of Shakti worship in Cuttack, supported by royal families, local communities, and devotees from across Odisha.

  • Though modest in size, the temple is rich in spiritual aura and mythological importance.

  • Maa Chandi is worshipped in her Ugra (fierce) form, believed to be a guardian who protects the city from all evils and disasters.
