Wimbledon '25 : Sabalenka, Alcaraz Storm into next rounds; No Major Upsets on Sunday
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka cruised into the Wimbledon quarterfinals, maintaining her dominant run by defeating 24th seed Elis Martinez in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), in the pre-quarterfinals on Sunday. In a tournament that has already witnessed several upsets, there were none on this particular day.
In the other women’s pre-quarterfinal matches, it was a battle among four unseeded players. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova overcame Sonay Kartal in straight sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, while Laura Siegemund made quick work of Solana Sierra, winning 6-3, 6-2.
In the men’s singles, fifth seed Taylor Fritz progressed to the next round via a walkover against Jordan Thompson. Fritz was leading 6-1, 3-0 when Thompson retired from the match due to an injury.
Karen Khachanov delivered a dominant performance to beat Kamil Majchrzak in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. Meanwhile, a high-voltage clash unfolded between second seed Carlos Alcaraz and 14th seed Andrey Rublev. Rublev had claimed the first set 7-6 (7-5) in a close tiebreaker , while Alcaraz fought back to take the second 6-3, setting up an intriguing battle . Alcaraz finally went on to take the 3rd & 4th sets by 6-4 each & moves to the next round.
