West Indies quicks restrict Aussies to 225 on day 1 of 3rd test , Hosts 16/1 at close
Australia’s innings crumbled on the opening day of the day-night Test at Sabina Park, despite a promising start. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the visitors were bowled out for just 225 runs, with their last seven wickets falling for a mere 68 runs.
West Indies’ pace attack was outstanding. Shamar Joseph led the way with 4 wickets, while Justin Greaves and Jayden Seales took 3 wickets each. In response, West Indies reached 16 for 1 in 9 overs by stumps, with Brathwaite (8*) and Roston Chase (3*) remaining unbeaten.
Australia’s Sudden Collapse
Australia appeared to be in a strong position at 129/2 with Steve Smith (48) and Cameron Green (46) building a solid partnership. However, just before the dinner break, Green was bowled by a brilliant delivery from Seales, triggering a collapse.
After that, Shamar Joseph (4/33), Justin Greaves (3/56), and Seales dismantled Australia’s middle and lower order. The likes of Travis Head, Alex Carey, and Pat Cummins failed to make any meaningful contributions.
Mitchell Starc, playing his 100th Test, was dismissed for a duck, but struck back with the ball, clean bowling debutant Kevlon Anderson. By the end of the day’s play, West Indies were 209 runs behind with 9 wickets in hand.
Nathan Lyon Dropped
For the first time since 2013, Australia played a Test without off-spinner Nathan Lyon, opting instead for a pace-heavy attack. In contrast, West Indies felt the conditions might support spin and recalled left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican to the playing XI.
Injury Setbacks for West Indies
West Indies suffered injury blows early on, as openers Mikyle Louis and John Campbell sustained injuries while fielding. As a result, Kevlon Anderson and Brandon King opened the batting. Despite losing an early wicket, King and Roston Chase ensured West Indies ended the day cautiously.
