India Seal Historic T20I Series Victory Over England with Clinical Win at Old Trafford
India’s women’s cricket team made history on Wednesday by clinching their first-ever bilateral T20I series win over England, securing a six-wicket victory in the fourth match at Old Trafford, Manchester. With this commanding performance, India now lead the five-match series 3-1 — their first multi-match series triumph on English soil, having previously failed to win any of their six prior away series against England.
England, after winning the toss and electing to bat, got off to a brisk start through Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Sophia Dunkley. But India soon struck back — Shree Charani dismissed Wyatt-Hodge early, and Deepti Sharma removed Dunkley at the close of the powerplay, leaving England 38 for 2.
A brief recovery followed, with skipper Tammy Beaumont and Alice Capsey adding 35 runs, guiding the hosts to 68 for 2 at the halfway mark. However, India's bowlers soon turned the screws. Radha Yadav delivered an exceptional spell of 2 for 15 in her four overs, and Charani picked up another wicket, as England faltered in the back half — scoring only 42 runs for the loss of five wickets in the final nine overs. A late flourish from Issy Wong and Sophie Ecclestone helped England reach 126 for 7.
India’s chase was full of intent. Openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana attacked from the outset, taking India to 56 inside five overs. Though both departed in quick succession — Verma for 31 and Mandhana for 28 — Jemimah Rodrigues and captain Harmanpreet Kaur ensured there were no further hiccups. Their 48-run stand effectively sealed the match, with Rodrigues staying unbeaten as India crossed the line with three overs to spare.
Recap of the Third T20I
India had the chance to clinch the series in the third T20I at The Oval but fell agonisingly short in a last-ball thriller, losing by five runs. Chasing 172, India were well-placed with another strong opening stand from Mandhana (56) and Verma (47). However, Sophie Ecclestone’s tight spell and key wickets from Lauren Filer turned the tide.
Despite some resistance from Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur, India couldn’t finish the chase — needing six runs off the final ball, Kaur failed to find the boundary.
Earlier, England posted 172 on the back of a commanding 137-run opening stand between Dunkley (75) and Wyatt-Hodge (66). But a dramatic collapse followed — they lost eight wickets for just 31 runs. Indian bowlers, led by Arundhati Reddy (3/32) and Deepti Sharma (3/27), cleaned up the tail efficiently.
