Divya Deshmukh Creates History, Wins 2025 Women’s World Cup and Earns GM Title

Divya Deshmukh, the 19-year-old International Master from Nagpur, Maharashtra, scripted history by defeating Grandmaster Humpy Koneru 1.5–0.5 in the tiebreaks to claim the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup. With this victory, she becomes only the third-ever champion of this prestigious event, following in the footsteps of GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (2021) and GM Aleksandra Goryachkina (2023).

The final was decided in two rapid tiebreak games (15+10 time control). In the first, Divya missed a promising chance, and the game ended in a draw. However, she bounced back brilliantly in the second game, displaying exceptional precision and nerves of steel. Playing Black, she equalised effortlessly before capitalising on Humpy’s time trouble to secure a memorable victory.

This remarkable triumph not only crowns Divya as the 2025 Women’s World Cup Champion but also marks her as one of the brightest emerging stars in global chess. After her final win, an emotional Divya embraced her mother and, in a brief interview, said:
“It’s hard for me to speak now. Of course, this definitely means a lot, but there is a lot more to achieve, so I am hoping that this is just the start.”

In addition to the USD 50,000 winner’s prize, Divya also automatically earns the Grandmaster (GM) title—the highest honour in chess. Notably, she becomes one of the rare players in history to achieve the GM title by winning a major FIDE event, bypassing the traditional route of earning three GM norms and reaching a 2500 rating.
Reflecting on this, she said:
“I still need time to process it. I think it was fate, me getting the Grandmaster title this way, because before this I didn’t even have one norm, and now I’m a Grandmaster.”

Divya’s triumph also secures her a spot in the 2026 Candidates Tournament, where she will be joined by runner-up GM Humpy Koneru and third-place finisher, former Women’s World Champion Tan Zhongyi.

This victory not only underscores Divya Deshmukh’s talent and determination but also signals the arrival of a new era in Indian and global women’s chess.
