Akashdeep takes 10 wkts as India thrash Eng by 336 runs at fortress Egbaston to level series 1-1
If there's one lesson to be learned about how to break a team’s arrogance, it comes from this youthful Indian cricket side. Just over four and a half years ago, Team India crushed Australia’s pride at the Gabba. Now, under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, an inexperienced but spirited Indian squad has handed England a humbling defeat at Edgbaston. India registered a massive 336-run victory in the second Test, securing their first-ever win at Edgbaston and breaking a 58-year-old drought at the venue. It also marked Gill's first win as captain, opening a new chapter for Team India.
On Sunday, July 6, as the final day of the Test began, the looming question was whether rain would spoil India’s dominance. Showers delayed the start of play, raising fears that the victory might slip away. But when play finally resumed at 5:10 PM, India wasted no time in wrapping things up.
It was Akash Deep, the fiery pacer, who once again led the charge. In the opening session, he removed Ollie Pope (24) clean bowled off his elbow and Harry Brook (23) lbw off a sharp break back , putting England on the back foot. Though Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith offered some resistance, the breakthrough came just before lunch when Washington Sundar dismissed the English captain lbw for 33.
Post-lunch, India needed only four wickets. Jamie Smith continued to attack from one end, but Prasidh Krishna removed Chris Woakes(7), and soon after, Akash Deep sent back Smith, who narrowly missed a second consecutive century by 12 runs after an entertaining knock of 88 . With that, Akash completed his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Fittingly, he also took the final wicket, dismissing Brydon Carse (38) and bundling England out for 271.
Akash Deep Creates History
With this win, the five-match Test series is now level at 1-1. England had earlier won the first Test at Leeds. India also became the first Asian team to win a Test at Edgbaston, a ground where they had never tasted victory before.
Akash Deep, who took 4 wickets in the first innings and 6 in the second, joined an elite list—becoming only the second Indian bowler to take 10 wickets in a Test match on English soil, after Chetan Sharma, who had achieved the feat at this very ground in 1986.
This win also marked India's first points in the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
Team India had played their first Test at Edgbaston back in 1967, and until this 2025 victory, had never won a match at the venue. In fact, India had lost 7 out of their 8 Tests here, with the only non-defeat being a draw in 1986. Despite having legendary players and strong captains over the decades, India could never conquer Edgbaston—until now.
With a new captain, Shubman Gill, and a team missing several key stars, India pulled off the unthinkable. This victory brings back memories of the historic Gabba win in 2021, where a similarly young Indian side defied all odds to beat Australia.
India’s triumph at Edgbaston is not just a win—it's a statement.
