Sophie Devine Stars as Gujarat Giants Edge Delhi Capitals by 4 Runs in WPL Thriller
Gujarat Giants clinched a nail-biting four-run victory over Delhi Capitals in a high-scoring Women’s Premier League encounter, with Sophie Devine emerging as the match-winner with an outstanding all-round performance.
Batting first, Ashleigh Gardner-led Gujarat Giants posted a formidable total of 209 for 5 in their 20 overs. The innings was anchored by Devine, who played a breathtaking knock of 95 off just 42 balls. Displaying an aggressive intent from the outset, Devine smashed seven fours and eight sixes. After the early dismissal of opener Beth Mooney for 19, Devine stitched together a crucial second-wicket partnership with Gardner to steady the innings.
Gardner provided excellent support, scoring a brisk 49 off 26 deliveries, including four fours and three sixes. However, apart from the Devine-Gardner stand, Gujarat batters failed to make significant contributions, losing wickets at regular intervals thereafter.
Delhi Capitals bowlers fought back admirably, led by Nandini Sharma, who claimed an impressive five-wicket haul for 33 runs. Shree Charani picked up two wickets for 42, Chinelle Henry took two for 43, while Shafali Verma chipped in with two wickets conceding just 21 runs.
In reply, Delhi Capitals also got off to a solid start. Though Shafali Verma departed early for 14, Lizelle Lee and Laura Wolvaardt took control of the chase. Lee played a magnificent innings of 86 off 54 balls, striking 12 fours and three sixes. Wolvaardt was equally impressive, scoring 77 off 37 balls with nine fours and three sixes. The duo added 90 runs for the second wicket, keeping Delhi firmly in the contest.
However, quick dismissals of Chinelle Henry (7) and skipper Jemimah Rodrigues (15) tilted the momentum back in Gujarat’s favour. Despite being close to the target, Delhi faltered under pressure in the final moments. Needing seven runs off the last over, they failed to score a single run and instead lost two crucial wickets.
Sophie Devine once again rose to the occasion with the ball, finishing with figures of 2 for 21. Her calm and intelligent bowling in the final over sealed the match for Gujarat. Rajeshwari Gayakwad also impressed with two wickets for 34 runs, while Kashvee Gautam picked up one wicket for 48.
Devine’s all-round brilliance ensured Gujarat Giants emerged victorious, handing Delhi Capitals a narrow yet memorable defeat in a pulsating WPL contest.
