Mumbai Indians return to winning ways with dominant 50-Run victory over Delhi Capitals in WPL

After losing their opening match near Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians bounced back strongly in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), registering a convincing win over Delhi Capitals. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, Mumbai defeated Jemimah Rodrigues’ Delhi side by 50 runs. In the other match of the day, Gujarat Giants edged past UP Warriorz by 10 runs.

Batting first, Mumbai suffered an early setback as Amelia Kerr was dismissed for a first-ball duck, playing an unnecessary shot off Lizzelle Lee. However, unlike the previous match, Nat Sciver-Brunt rose to the occasion and steadied the innings. She quickly changed the momentum, taking 10 runs off Chinelle Henry in the second over and striking two more boundaries in the fourth.

Sciver-Brunt added 49 runs for the second wicket with opener G Kamalini, laying a solid foundation for Mumbai. Although Kamalini looked fluent, she fell into a trap set by Delhi bowler Nandani Sharma. Even after Kamalini’s dismissal, Sciver-Brunt kept the scoring rate high and reached her half-century off just 32 balls.

Harmanpreet Kaur joined her at the crease and initially played a supporting role, ensuring Sciver-Brunt retained the strike. Sciver-Brunt’s innings ended when she was caught by Jemimah Rodrigues off Shree Charani’s bowling. She scored a brilliant 70 off 46 balls, laced with 13 fours.

From there, Harmanpreet took charge. After a quiet start to the tournament, the Mumbai skipper returned to her best form in this match. She opened up gradually and played a commanding unbeaten knock of 74 off 42 balls, smashing eight fours and three sixes. Mumbai Indians finished with an imposing total of 195 for 4.

Delhi Capitals never looked comfortable in the chase. They lost wickets at regular intervals right from the start. Lizzelle Lee (10) was dismissed with just 15 runs on the board, followed by quick failures from Shafali Verma (8), Laura Wolvaardt (9), Jemimah Rodrigues (1), Marizanne Kapp (10) and Niki Prasad (12).

Chinelle Henry was the lone fighter for Delhi, scoring 56 off 33 balls with five fours and three sixes, but she received no support from the other end. Delhi’s innings eventually folded for 145, handing Mumbai Indians a comprehensive 50-run victory.
