Alyssa Healy to Retire from all forms of Cricket After India Home Series

Eight-time World Cup winner Alyssa Healy has announced that she will retire from international cricket following Australia’s upcoming home series against India, set to begin in February.

The Australian women’s team captain revealed that she has been battling injuries over the past few months, a phase she described as mentally exhausting. After deciding to miss this year’s T20 World Cup in England, Healy chose to bid farewell to the game after what she called one of Australia’s “big series.”

Speaking on the Willow Talk Cricket Podcast, the 34-year-old said, “I chose the podcast to share this news. Today, I am officially announcing that I will retire from cricket at the end of the India series. Please don’t make me cry. This wasn’t an easy decision, but at some point, it had to be made.”

Healy added a lighter note, joking that her husband, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc, recently hit a ‘hole-in-one’ in golf—giving her all the more reason to dedicate her time to the sport to try and beat him.

Reflecting on her decision, Healy said, “This has been on my mind for a long time. The last few years have been mentally demanding, along with several injuries. You have to keep giving everything of yourself, but I felt my mental energy slowly fading. Getting the chance to finish my career at home against India is special because it’s one of our biggest series. Ending my journey in front of my teammates and family will mean a lot. Winning a World Cup in India would have been ideal, but finishing at home will be just as wonderful.”

India’s tour of Australia will start on February 15 and will include three T20 Internationals, three One-Day Internationals, and a one-off Test.

Healy finishes her career as one of Australia’s greatest wicketkeeper-batters. She scored 3,563 runs in 123 ODIs and 3,054 runs in 162 T20Is, while also amassing 489 runs in 10 Tests. Behind the stumps, she accounted for 172 catches and 103 stumpings, underlining her immense impact on the game.
