Sinner Advances After opponent retirement as Rybakina, Osaka progress at Aus Open

Jannik Sinner did not need to complete a full match to secure his place in the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday night. The two-time champion moved ahead after his opponent, Hugo Gaston, was forced to retire due to physical problems. In the women’s draw, fifth seed Elena Rybakina also advanced, while Naomi Osaka’s on-court fashion choice sparked debate despite her victory. Elsewhere, Novak Djokovic added a lighter moment by jokingly claiming “copyright” over Carlos Alcaraz’s serve.

Sinner was leading Gaston 6-2, 6-1 when the Frenchman, struggling physically, received treatment on court before deciding to withdraw. Sinner later said he had sensed something was wrong early on.

Rybakina, the last of the top 10 women’s seeds to take the court, also progressed but not without a fight. She defeated Kaja Juvan 6-4, 6-3 to extend her perfect first-round record in Melbourne to seven straight years. Her powerful serve stood out once again, with several dominant service games and no break points conceded until late in the match.

“It wasn’t an easy match,” Rybakina admitted. “I struggled on the return in the first set, but I’m happy with my serve. I’ve worked hard on it.”

Veteran Frenchman Gaƫl Monfils played his final Australian Open match, losing 7-6, 5-7, 4-6, 5-7 to Australian qualifier Dane Sweeny. The 39-year-old, who has announced that 2026 will be his final season, addressed the crowd afterward.

“I’ve been playing here since 2003. Now it’s 2026. An amazing journey comes to an end,” Monfils said, thanking the Melbourne fans for their support.

Naomi Osaka also moved into the second round, beating Antonio Ruzic 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, but much of the discussion centered on her outfit. She arrived on court wearing a sea-blue tracksuit jacket, white wide-leg bottoms, a white umbrella and a cap that partially covered her face. The outfit, designed by fashion designer Robert Wun, surprised commentators and fans alike, raising questions about its suitability for a tennis court.

In other men’s results, Lorenzo Musetti advanced after his opponent Rafael Collignon retired while Musetti was leading. Eighth seed Ben Shelton defeated Ugo Humbert in straight sets, Stefanos Tsitsipas fought back to beat Shintaro Mochizuki, and ninth seed Taylor Fritz also progressed. In the women’s draw, ninth seed and defending champion Madison Keys cruised past Oleksandra Oliynykova.
