Gujarat Giants Beat UP Warriorz by 45 Runs, Strengthen Playoff Push in WPL
UP Warriorz suffered another setback in the Women’s Premier League as they went down to Gujarat Giants by 45 runs, slipping behind in the playoff race. After bouncing back with two wins following a hat-trick of defeats, UP failed to maintain momentum and were outplayed by Ashleigh Gardner’s side.
Batting first, Gujarat Giants posted 153 for 8 in 20 overs. In reply, UP Warriorz were bowled out for just 108 in 17.3 overs. Sophie Devine emerged as the star of the match, contributing with both bat and ball. She remained unbeaten on 50 and also picked up two wickets to lead Gujarat’s dominant performance.
UP captain Meg Lanning won the toss and opted to bowl first. Gujarat got off to a brisk start but Dani Wyatt-Hodge (14) and Anushka Sharma (14) failed to convert their starts. Captain Ashleigh Gardner also had a quiet outing, scoring only 5 runs. The innings was steadied by Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine, who added crucial runs in the middle overs.
Mooney scored 38 before getting out, after which Gujarat lost a few quick wickets. Devine, however, held one end firmly and accelerated in the death overs, smashing 16 runs in the final over to take Gujarat to a competitive total of 153. For UP, Kranti Goud and Sophie Ecclestone took two wickets each, while Shikha Pandey and Chloe Tryon picked up one apiece.
Chasing 154, UP lost opener Kiran Navgire on the second ball of the innings. Meg Lanning and Phoebe Litchfield tried to rebuild, but Lanning’s dismissal shifted the momentum. Harleen Deol struggled and managed just 3 runs off 12 balls. Litchfield’s dismissal for 32 further dented UP’s chase.
All hopes then rested on Deepti Sharma, but she too failed, getting out for just 4. Gujarat’s spinners applied the brakes effectively, increasing the pressure on the batters. UP kept losing wickets while trying to accelerate. Chloe Tryon fought a lone battle with an unbeaten 30, but it was not enough as UP were bowled out for 108.
Rajeshwari Gayakwad was the pick of the bowlers for Gujarat with three wickets. Renuka Singh Thakur and Sophie Devine took two wickets each, while Gardner and Kashvee Gautam claimed one apiece.
With this win, Gujarat Giants moved up to second place in the points table, overtaking Mumbai Indians. They now have 6 points from 6 matches. UP Warriorz remain at the bottom with just 4 points from the same number of games.
