RCB March Into WPL Playoffs With Commanding Win Over Gujarat Giants, wins 5 in a row
Royal Challengers Bangalore continued their dominant run in the Women’s Premier League, strengthening hopes of a rare title defence that has so far eluded the men’s IPL. On Monday in Vadodara, Smriti Mandhana’s side sealed qualification for the playoffs with a thumping 61-run victory over Gujarat Giants, becoming the first team to reach the knockout stage.
Bangalore have been flawless this season, winning all five of their matches to sit comfortably on top of the table with 10 points, six clear of the teams below them. The match also marked the first WPL fixture at the Kotambi Stadium after the second phase of the tournament was shifted from Navi Mumbai to Vadodara.
Asked to bat first, Bangalore were jolted early. Grace Harris fell for 1 in the opening over, followed quickly by Georgia Wareham, dismissed for 1 by Kashvee Gautam in the second. With the top order under pressure, Mandhana steadied the innings alongside Gauthami Naik, adding 60 runs for the third wicket.
Mandhana, however, could not convert the start into a big score and was dismissed for a brisk 26 off 23 balls, laced with four boundaries, by Ashleigh Gardner. The momentum was then carried forward by Naik and Richa Ghosh, whose aggressive partnership transformed the innings. The duo added 69 runs for the fourth wicket, with Richa striking 27 off just 20 balls, including three towering sixes.
Naik was the standout performer with the bat, playing a confident and fluent knock of 73 off 55 deliveries, featuring seven fours and a six. Late cameos from Radha Yadav, who scored 17 off eight balls, pushed Bangalore to an imposing 178 for 6 in their 20 overs.
Gujarat’s chase unravelled almost immediately. Wickets fell at regular intervals, leaving them reeling early. Beth Mooney was removed for 3 in the second over, and in the same over Sophie Devine was dismissed for a duck by Sayali. Lauren Bell then sent Kanika Ahuja back without scoring, reducing Gujarat to 5 for 3 and effectively ending the contest.
A brief resistance came through a fourth-wicket stand between Anushka Sharma (18) and Ashleigh Gardner (54). Gardner battled on with a composed half-century, but lacked sustained support from the other end. As a result, Gujarat could only manage 117 for 8 in their allotted overs, long after the match had slipped out of their grasp.
Sayali starred with the ball, picking up three wickets for 21 runs, while Nadine de Klerk claimed two for 17, capping off a comprehensive all-round performance by Bangalore.
With momentum firmly on their side, RCB now look well placed to defend their WPL title and continue a dominance that has set them apart this season.
