Gardner, Wareham stars in Gujarat Giants 10 run win over UP Warriorz in WPL26

Gujarat Giants registered a thrilling 10-run victory over UP Warriors in their opening match, successfully defending the highest total ever in the history of the Women’s Premier League. Led by captain Ashleigh Gardner, Gujarat set a record target of 208 runs for UP Warriors. Despite a strong chase, UP could manage 197 runs for the loss of eight wickets.

Gujarat’s win was built on outstanding all-round performances. Captain Ashleigh Gardner and Anushka Sharma starred with the bat, while the bowling attack, led by Renuka Singh Thakur, Sophie Devine and Georgia Wareham, delivered at crucial moments.

UP Warriors had a disastrous start to their chase. With just three runs on the board, explosive opener Kiran Navgire was clean bowled by Renuka Singh. Meg Lanning and Litchfield then tried to steady the innings, adding 70 runs for the second wicket. However, Lanning & Harleen  fell at the same score followed soon by Deepti Sharma pushing UP into trouble at 74/4 . Phoebe Litchfield fought valiantly from one end, playing an aggressive knock, but Sophie Devine dismissed her to give Gujarat a major breakthrough. Litchfield scored a brilliant 78 off 44 balls, hitting eight fours and five sixes with a mixture of conventional & breathtaking improvised shots and well supported briefly by Shweta Sherawat (25) .

Earlier, Gujarat Giants posted 207 for four, riding on Ashleigh Gardner’s superb 65 and an unbeaten 27 off just 10 balls from Georgia Wareham. Sent in to bat first, Gujarat built a strong foundation through a 103-run partnership for the third wicket between Anushka Sharma and Gardner. Anushka scored an impessive 44 off 30 balls, while Gardner struck six fours and three sixes in her 41-ball blazing innings.

Georgia Wareham’s late onslaught propelled Gujarat past the 200-run mark. Opener Sophie Devine was dismissed in the sixth over with the score at 38. Gardner fell in the 18th over to Sophie Ecclestone, but Wareham’s aggressive cameo, which included one four and three sixes, ensured a massive total. Bharti Fulmali remained unbeaten on 14 off seven balls.

For UP Warriors, Sophie Ecclestone was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets for 32 runs, while Shikha Pandey and Deandra Dottin picked up one wicket each. Star Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma went wicketless, conceding 32 runs in her three overs.
