Harris, Mandhana Dominate as RCB Cruise Past UP Warriorz in WPL
Royal Challengers Bengaluru narrowly missed a 10-wicket victory but registered a commanding nine-wicket win over UP Warriorz in their second match to return to winning ways. With this back-to-back win, Bengaluru climbed to the top of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) table. Grace Harris and Smriti Mandhana starred with dominant batting performances.
Chasing a modest target of 144, Bengaluru sealed the match with 47 balls to spare. Harris set the tone from the very first ball, smashing Deepti Sharma for a boundary. She continued her assault in the fourth over with three fours off Kranti Goud, but it was the sixth over that completely turned the game in Bengaluru’s favour.
Deandra Dottin was taken apart by Harris, who began the over with a four off a no-ball and followed it up with 6, 4, 6, 6 and 4. The over yielded 32 runs, propelling Bengaluru to 78 without loss inside the powerplay. From that point, the result was virtually sealed, with Bengaluru’s dominance becoming more pronounced as the chase progressed.
Harris showed no signs of slowing down even after reaching her half-century, while Mandhana played the perfect supporting role, ensuring her partner got maximum strike. Harris received a reprieve in the 12th over when Harleen Deol dropped a straightforward catch, but she was dismissed in the same over after Meg Lanning held on to a catch. Harris departed after a scintillating 85 off 40 balls. Bengaluru wrapped up the chase in the following over, with Mandhana remaining unbeaten on 47.
Earlier, UP Warriorz struggled to get going after being sent in to bat. They managed only 36 runs in the powerplay and lost the wicket of Harleen Deol. Lauren Bell once again bowled with excellent control, troubling the UP batters with her swing. Harleen survived a few close calls before eventually falling to Bell.
Smriti Mandhana introduced Shreyanka Patil in the final over of the powerplay, and she nearly removed Meg Lanning straight away, but replays showed that Arundhati Reddy had failed to take a clean catch.
Phoebe Litchfield attempted to revive the innings, hitting two fours in an over off Shreyanka and later a six with a switch hit. However, once the powerplay ended, UP suffered a dramatic collapse, losing three wickets in three balls. Shreyanka dismissed Litchfield on the final ball of the eighth over, and Nadine de Klerk struck twice in the ninth over to remove Kiran Navgire (5) and Shweta Sehrawat (0).
Deepti Sharma and Deandra Dottin then steadied the innings with an 83-run partnership off 72 balls, helping UP reach a respectable total. Deepti remained unbeaten on 45 off 35 balls, hitting five fours and a six, while Dottin scored an unbeaten 40 off 37 balls with three fours and a six. However, their effort proved insufficient as Bengaluru completed a comprehensive victory.
