Alcaraz Cruises into Aus Open2026 Last 16; Sabalenka, Medvedev Survive Tough Tests
Carlos Alcaraz looked back to his dominant best as he stormed into the pre-quarterfinals of the Australian Open with a straight-sets victory over France’s Corentin Moutet. The Spanish star won 6-2, 6-4, 6-1, barely breaking a sweat in a match that lasted just over two hours.
Alcaraz was in complete control throughout, using his powerful serve and aggressive baseline game to keep Moutet under constant pressure. He won 71 per cent of points on his first serve and converted eight of his 13 break-point opportunities. Although Moutet managed to break Alcaraz twice, the world number one never looked in danger of losing the match.
World number one in women’s singles, Aryna Sabalenka, also booked her place in the last 16, but not without a fight. She defeated Anastasia Potapova in straight sets, 7-6, 7-6, with both sets decided in tie-breaks. Known for her fiery temperament, Sabalenka once again made a relatively comfortable match harder than necessary due to a high number of unforced errors. However, she held her nerve in crucial moments to seal the win.
Coco Gauff produced a strong comeback to advance as well. The American third seed lost the opening set against fellow American Hailey Baptiste but bounced back to win 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 and move into the next round.
Daniil Medvedev faced an even tougher challenge, coming back from two sets down against unseeded Fabian Marozsan. The Russian eventually prevailed in a five-set thriller, winning 6-7, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, 6-3, after appearing on the brink of an early exit.
Third seed Alexander Zverev also progressed, defeating Cameron Norrie in four sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Other notable players to reach the pre-quarterfinals include Alex de Minaur, Mirra Andreeva and Elina Svitolina.
However, there was disappointment for women’s seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, who was knocked out in straight sets by 29th seed Eva Jovic.
