Djokovic Reaches AusOpen'26 QF via Walkover; Sinner, Shelton, Musetti and Swiatek progress

Novak Djokovic advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open after receiving a walkover, while second seed Jannik Sinner, Ben Shelton and Lorenzo Musetti registered convincing wins in the men’s singles. In the women’s draw, second seed Iga Swiatek progressed to the last eight along with Elena Rybakina, Amanda Anisimova and Jessica Pegula. India’s Yuki Bhambri exited in the third round of the men’s doubles.

The 38-year-old Djokovic got some extra rest ahead of the quarterfinals as his fourth-round opponent, 16th seed Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic, withdrew due to injury. As a result, Djokovic moved into the last eight without playing.

Sinner, meanwhile, secured a comfortable victory in the pre-quarterfinals, defeating fellow Italian and 22nd seed Luciano Darderi 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). However, the match saw a brief controversy when Sinner was asked by the chair umpire to remove a “Whoop” tracker worn under his wristband, a device used to monitor physical metrics. After some discussion, Sinner complied, and the incident did not affect his performance.

On Monday, 12th seed Casper Ruud of Norway was knocked out by eighth seed Ben Shelton of the United States, who won 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. Another American, ninth seed Taylor Fritz, also bowed out after losing 2-6, 5-7, 4-6 to fifth seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy.

In the women’s singles, Swiatek lived up to expectations, thrashing Australia’s unseeded Maddison Inglis 6-0, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals. In the process, she created a record by becoming the youngest woman in 23 years to reach the quarterfinals of six consecutive Grand Slam tournaments. The last player to achieve this feat was Serena Williams in the 2002–03 season.

Fifth seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan defeated 21st seed Elise Mertens of Belgium 6-1, 6-3. Fourth seed Amanda Anisimova of the United States had to battle harder, edging past China’s unseeded Wang Xinyu 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. Sixth seed Jessica Pegula also progressed, beating fellow American and ninth seed Madison Keys 6-3, 6-4.

In men’s doubles, Yuki Bhambri and his Swedish partner Andre Goransson, the 10th seeds, were eliminated in the third round. They lost 6-7 (7-9), 3-6 to the unseeded Brazilian pair of Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos.
