The history of Chengalamma Parameshwari Temple dates back over a thousand years, with strong associations to local Chola-period traditions and ancient Dravidian Shakti worship. According to legend, the region was once terrorised by a cruel demon or chieftain named Chenga, who oppressed the people.

Goddess Parameshwari manifested in a fierce form to defeat Chenga and restore peace. After his destruction, she came to be known as Chengalamma—the goddess who annihilated Chenga. The site where the demon was slain became sacred, and villagers established a shrine that gradually evolved into the present temple.

Historical records suggest that the temple received patronage from Chola, Pallava, and later Vijayanagara rulers, who expanded and renovated the structure. Over centuries, the temple became the guardian deity (Grama Devata) of Sullurpeta and surrounding regions.
