Mumbai Indians hand Gujarat Giants their First Defeat in WPL courtesy Harmanpreet masterclass
Gujarat Giants suffered their first loss of the Women’s Premier League on Tuesday, going down to Harmanpreet Kaur’s Mumbai Indians by seven wickets. Despite posting a strong total of 192 for 5, Gujarat were overtaken as Mumbai chased down the target with 193 for 3 in 19.2 overs. With this win, Mumbai moved up to second place on the points table, overtaking Gujarat on net run rate.
Winning the toss, Mumbai captain Harmanpreet Kaur opted to field. Gujarat, however, failed to get off to a solid start despite batting first. Opener Sophie Devine was dismissed early for 8. Beth Mooney and Kanika Ahuja then steadied the innings with a crucial partnership. Mooney scored 33 off 26 balls, including three fours and a six, while Kanika struck a brisk 35 off 18 deliveries, hitting four fours and two sixes.
The highest score for Gujarat came from Georgia Wareham, who remained unbeaten on 43 off 33 balls, with four fours and a six. She was well supported at the death by Bharati Fulmali, who smashed 36 off just 15 balls, including three fours and three sixes. Captain Ashleigh Gardner contributed 20 off 11 balls. Ayushi Soni retired out after scoring 11 off 14 deliveries, as Gujarat looked to accelerate in the latter stages.
For Mumbai, Shabnim Ismail was the most economical, picking up 1 wicket for 25 runs. Hayley Matthews, Nicola Carey, and Amelia Kerr also claimed one wicket each.
Chasing 193, Mumbai suffered early setbacks, losing both openers inside the powerplay. Gunalani Kamalini (13) and Hayley Matthews (22) failed to provide a solid start, leaving Mumbai at 37 for 2. Harmanpreet then took charge of the chase, rebuilding the innings with Amanjot Kaur. Amanjot scored a fluent 40 off 26 balls, striking seven fours, as the pair added 72 runs for the third wicket.
After Amanjot’s dismissal, Harmanpreet found an able partner in Nicola Carey. The Australian all-rounder immediately lifted the scoring rate. Harmanpreet played a composed and authoritative knock, remaining unbeaten on 71 off 43 balls, which included seven fours and two sixes. Carey supported her brilliantly with an unbeaten 38 off 23 balls, hitting six fours. Their unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 84 runs guided Mumbai to a comfortable victory.
For Gujarat, Sophie Devine picked up 1 wicket for 29 runs, while Kashvee Gautam and Renuka Singh Thakur claimed one wicket each but were unable to halt Mumbai’s charge.
The win not only marked Mumbai Indians’ rise to second place but also underlined Harmanpreet Kaur’s leadership and match-winning ability under pressure.
