Gujarat Giants Edge Out Delhi Capitals in Thrilling WPL Last-Ball Finish

Gujarat Giants pulled off a dramatic three-run victory over Delhi Capitals in a nail-biting Women’s Premier League clash, sealing the match on the very last ball. All-rounder Sophie Devine emerged as the hero for Gujarat, picking up two crucial wickets in the final over to script a memorable win. Despite a valiant late assault from Niki Prasad, Delhi fell agonisingly short.

Batting first, Gujarat Giants posted a competitive total of 174 for 9. Their innings got off to a shaky start as opener Sophie Devine was dismissed early for 13. However, Beth Mooney and Anushka Sharma steadied the innings with a vital partnership. Mooney played a fluent knock of 58 off 46 balls, hitting seven boundaries, while Anushka, batting at No. 3, struck an impressive 39 off just 25 deliveries, laced with eight fours.

Lower down the order, Tanusha Kanwar provided a late boost with a brisk cameo, scoring 21 off 11 balls with three fours and a six.

For Delhi Capitals, spinner Sri Charani was the standout performer with the ball, claiming four wickets for 31 runs. Chinelle Henry chipped in with two wickets for 38 runs, while Marizanne Kapp, Nandini Sharma and Minnu Mani picked up one wicket each.

In reply, Delhi Capitals suffered a dramatic collapse, losing five wickets for just 85 runs and slipping under severe pressure. Shafali Verma (14), Lizelle Lee (11), Jemimah Rodrigues (16), Kapp (0) and Henry (9) all departed cheaply. Laura Wolvaardt attempted to steady the chase with a composed 24 off 23 balls, but the required run rate kept climbing.

The real fightback came from Niki Prasad and Sneh Rana, who launched a fearless counter-attack in the final overs. Rana smashed 29 off 15 balls, including three fours and two sixes, while Prasad played a sensational knock of 47 off 24 balls, striking nine boundaries and keeping Delhi’s hopes alive.

Drama peaked in the 20th over when a run-out appeal against Rana was reviewed multiple times before the third umpire declared her not out. However, Rana was dismissed on the fourth ball of the final over, and with four runs needed off the last delivery, Prasad was also sent back to the pavilion, handing Gujarat a thrilling victory.

Devine was once again the star with the ball, finishing with excellent figures of 4 for 37. Rajeshwari Gayakwad impressed with 3 for 20, while Ashleigh Gardner picked up one wicket for 37.

In the end, it was Gujarat’s nerve under pressure and Devine’s brilliance in crunch moments that made the difference in a truly electrifying contest.
