Harmanpreet’s Lone Fight in Vain as Gujarat Giants Defeat Mumbai Indians in WPL

Gujarat Giants registered a crucial win over Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League, defeating them by 11 runs in a high-scoring encounter. Batting first, Gujarat posted a competitive 167 for 4, riding on strong performances from their middle order. In reply, Mumbai fell short at 156 for 7, despite a valiant knock from captain Harmanpreet Kaur.

Gujarat had an early setback when opener Beth Mooney was dismissed for just 5. The innings was steadied by Sophie Devine and Anushka Sharma. Devine scored 25 off 21 balls, while Anushka contributed a handy 33 from 31 deliveries. The real momentum, however, came through a crucial 71-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Ashley Gardner and Georgia Wareham. Gardner smashed 46 off 28 balls, including seven fours and a six, while Wareham remained unbeaten on 44 off 26 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes. Bharti Fulmali stayed not out on 5 as Gujarat finished on 167 for 4.

For Mumbai, Amelia Kerr was the most successful bowler with figures of 2 for 26. Shabnim Ismail picked up one wicket for 29 runs, while Nat Sciver-Brunt claimed one for 36.

Chasing a target of 168, Mumbai got off to a poor start, losing three wickets for just 37 runs. Openers Hayley Matthews (6) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (2) failed to make an impact, while Sajeevan Sajana scored 26 off 25 balls but could not convert it into a big innings. Under pressure, Harmanpreet Kaur tried to rescue the chase, but she received little support from the rest of the batting line-up. Kerr (20), Amanjot Kaur (13), Sanskriti Gupta (0) and Poonam Khemnar (2) all failed to contribute meaningfully.

Harmanpreet remained unbeaten on a brilliant 82 off 48 balls, striking eight fours and four sixes, but her heroic effort went in vain as Mumbai ended on 156 for 7.

For Gujarat, Sophie Devine and Georgia Wareham picked up two wickets each, conceding 23 and 26 runs respectively. Ashley Gardner took one for 26, Kashvee Gautam claimed one for 12, while Rajeshwari Gayakwad finished with one wicket for 46.

With this win, Gujarat moved up to second place on the points table with 10 points from eight matches, while Mumbai slipped to third with six points from the same number of games.
