Sinner, Djokovic and Swiatek breezes through to third Round of Australian Open 2026
Top seeds Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek advanced to the third round of the Australian Open with commanding straight-set victories, brushing aside their opponents and the home crowd’s hopes. Defending women’s champion Madison Keys also progressed, while Djokovic once again spoke about his retirement plans after his win & indicated that the time is not anytime soon.
At the Rod Laver Arena, world number one Jannik Sinner gave 88th-ranked James Duckworth no room to breathe. The Italian star swept past the Australian wildcard in emphatic fashion, winning 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. Despite loud support for the local favourite, Sinner remained unfazed and cruised into the next round with a smile, continuing his steady march towards a potential third consecutive Australian Open title.
Fourth seed Novak Djokovic faced 141st-ranked Francesco Maestrelli, who had come through the qualifiers. Although Maestrelli enjoyed strong backing from the crowd, he stood little chance against the 24-time Grand Slam champion. Djokovic dominated the contest, sealing a comfortable 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory to book his place in the third round.
After a slightly sluggish start in the opening round, Iga Swiatek is gradually finding her rhythm. The Polish star defeated Marie Bouzkova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, as she continues her quest for a maiden Australian Open title.
Defending women’s singles champion Madison Keys of the United States also moved forward, though not without a brief scare. She raced through the first set against compatriot Ashlyn Krueger, winning it 6-1, but struggled in the second, trailing 2-5 at one stage. Showing grit and composure, Keys won five consecutive games to take the set 7-5 and seal the match.
Among other seeded players, Jessica Pegula, Lorenzo Musetti and Elena Rybakina also advanced with wins. Naomi Osaka, however, had to fight harder, dropping a set before defeating Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to secure her place in the third round.
