South Africa Dominate First Day of Centurion Test Against Pakistan
On the opening day of the first Test at SuperSport Park in Centurion, Pakistan's batting faltered as they were bowled out for 211. South Africa, in response, ended the day at 82 for three, with Pakistan’s bowlers making late breakthroughs.
Khurram Shahzad struck twice while Mohammad Abbas claimed a crucial wicket before stumps, giving Pakistan a glimmer of hope after a tough outing with the bat.
The day began with South Africa winning the toss and electing to field, a decision that paid off immediately. Corbin Bosch, making his Test debut, had a dream start by dismissing Pakistan captain Shan Masood with his very first delivery. Masood edged to Marco Jansen at third slip, making Bosch the 25th player in Test history to take a wicket with his first ball. Bosch, playing on his home ground, went on to claim 4-63 in 15 overs.
Dane Paterson was equally effective, taking 5-61 in 16 overs. His disciplined bowling dismantled Pakistan’s middle order, starting with Ayub (14) and Babar Azam, who was caught pushing at a delivery outside the off-stump for just four runs.
Pakistan found some stability through a fifth-wicket partnership of 81 runs between Kamran Ghulam and Mohammad Rizwan. Ghulam, who scored a brisk 54 off 71 balls, eventually fell to Paterson after mistiming a pull shot that was caught by Kagiso Rabada. Rizwan followed soon after, edging to Aiden Markram at second slip for 27.
South Africa’s bowlers struck in quick succession as Pakistan lost three wickets without adding to the score. Aamer Jamal was bowled by Bosch, Salman Agha fell to Paterson’s short ball, and Bosch dismissed Naseem Shah for a duck.
The final wicket partnership of Khurram Shahzad (9*) and Mohammad Abbas (10*) added a valuable 20 runs, frustrating the South African attack before the innings ended.
In reply, South Africa faced early setbacks. Shahzad dismissed two top-order batters, while Abbas added a late wicket to keep Pakistan in the game. Despite the hosts’ strong start with the ball, the visitors showed resilience with their late fightback.
Day two promises to be an exciting contest as both teams aim to gain the upper hand.
