Atkinson hattrick floors Kiwis as England pile on the runs in 2nd innings of 2nd test


England’s batters dominated proceedings on the second day of the Test match in Wellington, racing to 378/5 at stumps and amassing a commanding 533-run lead over New Zealand. Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, and Harry Brook all played scintillating innings, each scoring quick half-centuries to leave the hosts under immense pressure.


New Zealand started the day at 86/5 but managed to add just 39 runs before being bowled out for 125, courtesy of a superb bowling display by England. Gus Atkinson stole the show in the morning session, claiming a sensational hat-trick — the first-ever in Wellington during a Test match — and becoming the 15th Englishman to achieve this milestone. The big quick dismissed Nathan Smith bowled , Henry caught in the slips off a short ball & Southee lbw to complete a sensational  hattrick . Atkinson finished with figures of 4-31, while Brydon Carse supported him ably with 4-46, sharing eight wickets between them. England walked away with a sizeable 155-run first-innings lead.


In their second innings, England lost Zak Crawley early for 8, but Jacob Bethell and Ben Duckett steadied the innings with an outstanding 187-run partnership. Both played breathtaking shots as England raced away to a bigger lead . Bethell fell just four runs short of a maiden Test century, dismissed by Tim Southee for 96 in the 38th over. Duckett followed soon after, departing for 92 as Southee struck again.


Harry Brook then took charge, attacking from the outset to notch up another electrifying half-century before Glenn Phillips dismissed him for a sparkling  55. Joe Root, unbeaten on a dazzling 73 laced with sumptuous strokes  , and Ben Stokes (35*) compounded New Zealand’s woes, adding an unbroken 51-run stand before the day’s play ended.
