Juan Soto Signs Historic $765 Million Contract setting most expensive deal in Sports History
The New York Mets have signed a groundbreaking contract with Major League Baseball (MLB) star Juan Soto, marking the most expensive deal in sports history. The 26-year-old outfielder has agreed to a 15-year contract worth $765 million, approximately ₹6,493 crore, to play for the Mets.
Soto’s deal surpasses the previous record held by Shohei Ohtani, who signed a 10-year, $700 million (₹5,794 crore) contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The financial terms of Soto’s agreement could increase to $805 million (₹6,831 crore) if certain performance conditions are met.
Under the contract, Soto will receive an annual salary of $51 million (₹433 crore) initially, which is expected to rise to $55 million (₹466 crore) after five years. Additionally, he is set to earn a $75 million (₹636 crore) bonus. The contract includes a provision allowing Soto to opt out after 2029 if desired, giving him flexibility in his career.
Initially, the Mets proposed a 16-year deal worth $760 million (₹6,449 crore), averaging $47.5 million (₹403 crore) annually. However, Soto negotiated a shorter term and slightly higher salary, further solidifying his status as one of MLB’s premier players.
Soto made his MLB debut in 2018 with the Washington Nationals and has since established himself as one of the league’s brightest talents. This record-breaking deal ensures his place at the forefront of baseball for the foreseeable future.
