Scammers Innovating New Ways to Exploit PAN Card Users: A Fraudulent Email Exposed

Scammers are constantly devising new ways to deceive unsuspecting individuals. A recent fraud has emerged where scammers impersonate government officials and send phishing emails with the subject line, “Download e-PAN Card Free Online: A Step-by-Step Guide.” The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check has flagged these emails as fake and has urged the public not to fall for such deceptive messages. They recommend reporting such incidents on platforms like X (formerly known as Twitter).

How the e-PAN Scam Works

These phishing emails mimic official communications, urging recipients to download their e-PAN cards. The email often includes a link that redirects users to a counterfeit website. This fake webpage is designed to look authentic and prompts users to enter personal details. Any information provided on this platform is stolen by the scammers, potentially leading to identity theft or financial fraud.

Official Warning from the Income Tax Department

To combat such scams, the Income Tax Department has issued guidelines to help individuals identify and avoid phishing attempts.

What to Avoid:

Do not reply: Refrain from responding to any suspicious emails.

Do not open attachments: Attachments may contain harmful malware.

Do not click on links: These could redirect you to fraudulent sites. If you accidentally click, avoid entering any personal information.

Do not copy-paste links: Even links that appear genuine might lead to malicious websites.

Protective Measures:

Use updated antivirus software, spyware protection, and firewalls to secure your devices.

Be wary of unsolicited emails, which may contain harmful software designed to compromise your device or monitor your activities.

Always verify the authenticity of any communication claiming to be from the Income Tax Department. Staying vigilant is crucial to protecting your personal and financial information from cybercriminals.
