Miller and Linde Lead South Africa to Victory in T20 Thriller Against Pakistan
South Africa secured a thrilling 11-run win over Pakistan in the first T20 International of the series in Durban on Wednesday night. The Proteas were powered by a stunning innings from David Miller and an exceptional all-round performance from George Linde, successfully defending a target of 184 in a nail-biting encounter.
The match was a rollercoaster, with momentum shifting multiple times. South Africa appeared in control until Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan mounted a fierce counterattack in the 17th over, hammering 24 runs off Kwena Maphaka to reignite the chase. However, Linde turned the tide in the following over with a crucial three-wicket haul. Rizwan’s valiant knock of 74 from 62 balls wasn’t enough, as Maphaka dismissed him in the final over to seal the victory for the hosts.
Miller’s batting brilliance was the highlight of South Africa’s innings. He rescued the innings in style after Pakistan bowlers led by Shaheen & Abrar made early inroads denting the South African innings . Displaying classical strokes and precise ball-striking, he smashed eight sixes and four boundaries in a commanding knock of 83. Despite minimal support from his teammates, Miller formed a 43-run partnership with Heinrich Klaasen and laid the foundation for the Proteas' total.
Linde’s comeback to international cricket after two years was equally impactful. Scoring a rapid 48 off just 24 deliveries, he struck three fours and four sixes, ensuring the Proteas finished strongly. His 42-run partnership with Maphaka for the ninth wicket, including 30 runs in the last two overs, was pivotal in pushing the total to 184.
Pakistan’s standout performer with the ball was wrist spinner Abrar Ahmed, who claimed three wickets, including two dismissals with his deceptive googlies. While Abrar troubled South Africa’s top order, Pakistan’s batters struggled to build partnerships, Maphaka generated high pace at around 150 kph for a young 18 year old to dismiss star batter Babar Azam for a duck . Saim Ayub sparkled for a while but flattered to decieve as Pakistan kept losing wickets at regular intervals leaving Rizwan to anchor the innings.
Linde also starred with the ball, delivering a match-winning spell of 4/21. His tight lines and control stifled Pakistan’s middle order, and his critical breakthroughs in the death overs ensured South Africa stayed on top.
The win marks only the third T20 victory for the Proteas since the World Cup and gives coach Rob Walter a positive start in rebuilding the team. With this exciting performance, South Africa sets the stage for a highly competitive series.
