Pakistan Triumphs Over South Africa by 81 Runs to Clinch ODI Series
Pakistan secured a resounding 81-run victory against South Africa in the second ODI at Newlands, Cape Town, on Friday. With stellar performances from Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah in the bowling department, coupled with remarkable contributions from captain Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam with the bat, Pakistan claimed the ODI series.
South Africa’s run chase began positively, with Temba Bavuma striking a boundary on the very first ball. However, the momentum was short-lived as Haris Rauf dismissed Bavuma for 12 in the sixth over, ending a 34-run opening stand with Tony de Zorzi. De Zorzi looked promising, scoring 34 runs with a few stylish boundaries, but he was removed by spinner Abrar Ahmed in the 12th over.
Pakistani spinners Salman Agha and Abrar Ahmed tightened the screws during the middle overs, making it difficult for South African batters to accelerate. While Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, and David Miller all managed decent starts, none could convert their innings into significant scores.
Heinrich Klaasen was the standout performer for South Africa, playing a blistering knock of 97 runs off just 74 balls. However, the lack of support from the other end proved costly as wickets tumbled rapidly. Jansen, Phehlukwayo, and Kagiso Rabada fell cheaply to the relentless bowling of Shaheen and Naseem, sealing South Africa’s fate.

Rizwan, Babar, and Ghulam Shine with the Bat
Earlier in the match, Pakistan posted a competitive total of 329 runs in 49.5 overs, thanks to a 113-run partnership between Babar Azam and Rizwan and a fiery cameo by Kamran Ghulam.
The innings started shakily, with Jansen dismissing Abdullah Shafique in the opening over. However, Babar and Saim Ayub steadied the ship with a 48-run stand before Ayub was dismissed for 25 by Kwena Maphaka in the 10th over.
Once settled, Babar and Rizwan anchored the innings, mixing quick singles with occasional boundaries. Babar was eventually dismissed for 73 by Phehlukwayo, while Rizwan departed for 80 after a disciplined effort, falling to Maphaka.
Kamran Ghulam’s blistering knock of 63 off 32 balls injected momentum into the innings during the death overs. His explosive hitting, featuring five sixes and four boundaries, ensured Pakistan crossed the 300-run mark. Contributions from Agha Salman, Irfan Khan, and Shaheen Afridi added valuable runs in the final overs.
The third ODI will take place on December 22 at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
