Bumrah , Cummins , Lyon shines on day 4 as Ind v Aus 4th test heads for an exciting finish

Nitish Kumar Reddy's century and Washington Sundar's half-century helped put the Indian team in a competitive position. Despite being on the back foot in Melbourne, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj gave India hope of a remarkable comeback. On Monday, the final day of the match, it will be up to Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and the rest of the team to chase a formidable total . By the end of the day, Australia had scored 228/9, leading by 333 runs. India’s immediate goal on Monday will be to wrap up Australia’s second innings as quickly as possible.

India ended their first innings on Saturday at 358/9, with Nitish Kumar Reddy unbeaten on 105 and Siraj on 2. On Sunday, they added 11 more runs before Nitish was dismissed for 114 off Nathan Lyon’s delivery. India’s innings concluded at 369, giving the hosts a 105-run lead before Australia began their second innings.

Although Pat Cummins’ team started the day in a commanding position, the tide shifted as the day progressed. India’s bowlers took control on the challenging Melbourne pitch, putting pressure on the Australian side. However, missed chances, including three dropped catches by Yashasvi Jaiswal, allowed Australia to recover. Notably, Marnus Labuschagne was dropped on 46 in the slips off Akash Deep’s delivery, a missed opportunity that visibly frustrated Indian skipper Rohit Sharma.

Labuschagne made the most of the reprieve, anchoring Australia’s innings under pressure. Earlier Aussie wickets tumbled  a—Sam Constas (8) was bowled by Bumrah incoming ball , Usman Khawaja (21) was bowled by Siraj trying to drive , Steve Smith (13) slashed Siraj outside off , Travis Head (1) was caught at midwicket giving Bunrah his 200th test wicket , Mitchell Marsh (0) was caught in the slips of Bumrah , and Alex Carey (2) was bowled by Bumrah —Labuschagne partnered with Cummins to add a crucial 57 runs. Labuschagne was eventually dismissed for 70 by Siraj, leaving Australia in a relatively better position with a lead exceeding 250 runs.

Cummins, showing great resilience, remained steadfast at one end coming in at 91/6 . Even after Labuschagne’s departure, he worked to push the lead further before falling to Ravindra Jadeja for a superb 41.

After Australia’s ninth wicket fell at 173, India's bowlers struggled to dismiss the final wicket—a recurring issue with India’s bowling attack. Taking advantage, Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland extended Australia’s lead, frustrating the Indian team. The pair faced 107 balls in their unbeaten 55-run partnership, leaving India with less time to bat. Lyon finished with 41*, and Boland remained unbeaten on 10, leaving India with a daunting task on the final day.

It now remains to be seen whether Australia declares on the final morning or bats for a while . They  now lead India by 333 .
