Yoga : Anantasana (Sleeping Vishnu Pose)- Steps to perform & other details

Anantasana, also known as the Sleeping Vishnu Pose, is a reclining yoga posture inspired by the mythological depiction of Lord Vishnu resting on the cosmic serpent, Ananta (meaning "infinite"). This asana is part of Hatha Yoga and is renowned for improving balance, flexibility, and concentration. It stretches the sides of the body, particularly the hamstrings, obliques, and hips, while simultaneously enhancing body awareness and stability.

How to Perform Anantasana:

1. Preparation:

Begin by lying on your back in Savasana (Corpse Pose) on a yoga mat.

Relax your body and focus on deep breathing.

2. Positioning the Body:

Roll onto your right side and ensure your body forms a straight line from head to toes.

Place your right arm straight along the floor and rest your head gently on your right palm, keeping your elbow grounded for support.

3. Raising the Leg:

Bend your left knee and bring your left leg toward your torso.

Use your left hand to grab the big toe of your left foot, hooking it with your fingers.

4. Straightening the Leg:

Slowly extend your left leg upward, straightening it as much as possible.

Ensure your left arm and leg remain aligned vertically.

Keep your gaze steady, either at your raised foot or straight ahead.

5. Maintaining Balance:

Engage your core muscles to maintain stability.

Avoid letting your torso or hips roll forward or backward.

6. Breathing and Duration:

Take deep, steady breaths throughout the pose.

Hold the posture for 20-30 seconds, or longer if comfortable, maintaining calm and focus.

7. Releasing the Pose:

Gently lower your raised leg back to the floor.

Relax in the starting position before repeating the pose on the other side.

Tips for Beginners:

If balance is challenging, use a wall or cushion for support.

Focus on stretching comfortably without overstraining the hamstrings.

Benefits of Anantasana:

Improves flexibility in the hamstrings and hips.

Enhances balance and coordination.

Strengthens core muscles.

Stimulates mental focus and calmness.

With consistent practice, Anantasana can enhance both physical and mental well-being, making it a valuable addition to any yoga routine.
