Zverev Finally Breaks Grand Slam Barrier with French Open Triumph after a 5 set thriller

After three heartbreaking defeats in Grand Slam finals, Alexander Zverev finally claimed the biggest prize of his career, defeating Italy's Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-1 in a gripping French Open final at Court Philippe-Chatrier.

The victory marked a historic milestone for the German star, who captured his maiden Grand Slam title at the fourth attempt. Zverev had previously fallen short in the 2020 US Open final against Dominic Thiem, the 2024 French Open final against Carlos Alcaraz, and the 2025 Australian Open final against Jannik Sinner. This time, however, he held his nerve to emerge victorious after a battle lasting five sets.

The second seed entered Roland Garros as the leading title favourite after several of the sport's biggest names exited early. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner retired injured in the second round, while Novak Djokovic suffered a shock defeat to Brazil's Joao Fonseca in the same stage. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz missed the tournament because of injury, leaving Zverev with a golden opportunity that he seized emphatically.

With the triumph, Zverev became the first German man in 30 years to win a Grand Slam singles title. The last German champion was Boris Becker, who lifted the Australian Open trophy in 1996. He also joined Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev as only the third player born in the 1990s to win a Grand Slam title.

Cobolli, meanwhile, arrived in the final carrying the hopes of Italian tennis. The Italian enjoyed a dream run to the championship match and was aiming to become only the fourth Italian man to win a Grand Slam singles title after Nicola Pietrangeli, Adriano Panatta and Sinner. He had received a walkover in the semi-finals when compatriot and close friend Matteo Arnaldi withdrew because of a stomach problem. Despite the disappointment of defeat, Cobolli produced a courageous performance and pushed Zverev to the limit.

The final began in one-sided fashion as Zverev raced out of the blocks. The German broke Cobolli in the opening game and dominated the first set with powerful groundstrokes and relentless pressure. Cobolli struggled to cope with the pace and precision of Zverev's hitting as the set slipped away 6-1.

The Italian responded brilliantly in the second set. Playing with greater aggression and confidence, Cobolli mixed sharp movement with cleverly disguised drop shots. At 3-3 he earned a crucial break when a Zverev forehand drifted long, and he maintained his attacking intent to level the match by taking the set 6-4.

The third set proved pivotal. Both players held firm for much of the contest, but Cobolli faltered at the worst possible moment. Serving to stay in the set at 4-5, he committed a series of costly errors that allowed Zverev to secure the decisive break and move two sets to one ahead.

Cobolli refused to surrender. The fourth set produced some of the finest tennis of the afternoon as the Italian surged into a 5-3 lead. Zverev fought back impressively to level at 5-5, but Cobolli displayed tremendous resilience in the tie-break. Recovering from a 1-3 deficit, he struck a series of fearless forehand winners to force the match into a deciding fifth set.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically at the start of the decider. Zverev broke immediately, capitalising on a nervy service game from Cobolli. The German tightened his grip with another break to move 4-0 ahead and never looked back. Even when briefly threatened on serve, Zverev remained calm and composed, showcasing the maturity and mental strength that had eluded him in previous Grand Slam finals.

As Cobolli's resistance faded, Zverev surged to the finish line, sealing the fifth set 6-1 and collapsing in celebration after years of near misses. The victory was the culmination of perseverance, resilience and unwavering belief, finally earning him a place among Grand Slam champions.

For Cobolli, defeat was painful but honourable. For Zverev, it was the day his long wait ended and his Grand Slam dream became reality.
