FIFA WC 2026 : France power to big win over Norway, Spain edge out Uruguay, Egypt, Iran in dramatic draw

Day 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 (June 26, 2026) brought the group stages for Groups G, H, and I to a dramatic conclusion, solidifying heavyweights at the top while sending some teams on a nervous wait for third-place math.

Here is the complete match report for the six fixtures played across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Group I: European Dominance and African Fireworks

Norway 1 – 4 France (Boston Stadium, Massachusetts)

France secured the top spot in Group I with a convincing victory over an experimental Norway side that chose to rest several star players, including Erling Haaland. France set the tone inside the opening minute when Kylian Mbappé hit the crossbar just 25 seconds in. The breakthrough didn't take long: in the 7th minute, Mbappé slid a superb through ball to Ousmane Dembélé, who fired the former world champions into an early lead. Ousmane Dembélé struck again in the 19th minute, finding the net with a brilliantly angled shot to make it 2-0.

Norway responded immediately when an unmarked Thelo Aasgaard pulled one back in the 20th minute with a neat finish. Despite the brief scare, France maintained control, adding a third goal later before Désiré Doué put the game completely out of reach in the 93rd minute, nodding home a header from the center of the box following a pinpoint cross from Bradley Barcola.

Senegal 5 – 0 Iraq (Toronto Stadium, Ontario)

Senegal bounced back from previous group defeats with a relentless offensive display to crush Iraq in Toronto. Iraq’s hopes evaporated early when they were reduced to ten men following a direct red card in the 13th minute. Capitalizing on the man advantage, the African giants clinically dismantled Iraq's defensive lines to secure a massive 5-0 victory. This crucial margin of victory catapulted Senegal into the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams.

Group H: Narrow Margins and Stalemates

Uruguay 0 – 1 Spain (Guadalajara Stadium, Jalisco)

Spain Outlasts Uruguay in Guadalajara

Spain secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Uruguay in a tense Group H clash at the Guadalajara Stadium. The decisive moment came in the 42nd minute when Álex Baena scored a crucial goal that survived a tense VAR check. Uruguay pushed aggressively for an equalizer but struggled to break down the disciplined Spanish defense. Their frustrations boiled over deep into stoppage time when Agustín Canobbio was shown a red card in the 95th minute. With this result, Spain advances to the next round, while Uruguay is officially eliminated from the tournament.

Cabo Verde 0 – 0 Saudi Arabia (Houston Stadium, Texas)

Tournament debutants Cabo Verde continued their heroic, unbeaten fairytale by holding Saudi Arabia to a scoreless draw in Houston. Following unexpected draws against Spain and Uruguay, Cabo Verde showed immense defensive discipline once again. The draw was enough to secure Cabo Verde's historic passage straight into the Round of 32 alongside Spain, sparking joyous celebrations.

Group G: Belgium Explodes as Egypt Survives

New Zealand 1 – 5 Belgium (BC Place, Vancouver)

After a slow start to the tournament featuring two draws, Belgium finally unleashed their true potential by dismantling New Zealand to top Group G. Leandro Trossard opened the floodgates in the 28th minute, putting Belgium ahead before doubling his personal tally in the 50th minute to make it 2-0. Kevin De Bruyne added a piece of individual magic in the 66th minute, firing home Belgium's third.

The veteran Romelu Lukaku found his scoring boots in the 86th minute to make it 4-0. New Zealand pulled back a consolation goal in the 84th minute when Elijah Just found a gap in the Belgian defense, but Belgium had the final say in stoppage time when Alexis Saelemaekers scored in the 94th minute to wrap up an emphatic 5-1 win.

Egypt 1 – 1 Iran (Seattle Stadium, Washington)

Egypt and Iran Split Points in Dramatic Draw

Over in Group G, Egypt and Iran played out a thrilling 1–1 draw at the Seattle Stadium. Egypt caught the Iranian defense napping early on, with Mahmoud Saber finding the back of the net just 5 minutes into the match. Iran missed a golden opportunity to equalize five minutes later when captain Mehdi Taremi failed to convert a penalty, but Ramin Rezaeian quickly made amends by scoring the equalizer in the 14th minute. The final minutes were packed with drama as Taremi hit the crossbar and Shoja Khalilzadeh saw a potential 93rd-minute winner painfully disallowed by VAR for offside.

Group Standings and Tournament Impact

The dramatic draw in Seattle leaves Egypt in 2nd place in Group G with 5 points, safely advancing to the Round of 32 right behind Belgium on goal difference. Iran, meanwhile, finishes the group stage in 3rd place with 3 points. They now face a tense wait to find out if their goal difference will be enough to see them through as one of the best third-placed teams in the tournament.
