WT20IWC : Danny Wyatt 102 powers England to big win over Sri Lanka in opening match

England Women launched their ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign in spectacular fashion, overwhelming Sri Lanka Women by 87 runs in the tournament opener at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Backed by a record-breaking batting display and a ruthless bowling performance, the hosts sent a powerful message to the rest of the competition.

After Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and elected to field, England's batters seized complete control of the contest. Openers Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Amy Jones laid the foundation with an outstanding partnership that left the Sri Lankan attack searching for answers.

Wyatt-Hodge produced one of the finest innings in Women's T20 World Cup history. Displaying exquisite timing, fearless strokeplay and superb placement, she blasted an unbeaten 105 from just 62 deliveries. Her innings was decorated with a succession of elegant boundaries and powerful drives as she punished anything loose. The century was her third in T20 internationals and came only weeks after the birth of her daughter, making the achievement even more remarkable.

At the other end, Amy Jones played the perfect supporting role. She mixed aggression with composure to score a fluent 53, sharing a commanding 135-run opening stand with Wyatt-Hodge. The partnership effectively batted Sri Lanka out of the game before the halfway stage of the innings.

Sri Lanka's bowlers struggled throughout. Their difficulties were compounded by poor discipline, including wides, no-balls and missed chances in the field. England capitalised mercilessly on every error.

If Wyatt-Hodge and Jones provided the platform, captain Nat Sciver-Brunt delivered the finishing flourish. Returning from injury, she unleashed a breathtaking unbeaten 46 from a handful of deliveries, peppering the boundary ropes during a devastating late assault. England plundered runs at an extraordinary rate in the closing overs to finish on 219 for 1 — the highest team total ever recorded in Women's T20 World Cup history.

Faced with the daunting task of chasing 220, Sri Lanka needed a flying start but never managed to build any momentum. England's bowlers struck regularly, preventing any significant partnerships from developing. The required run rate climbed rapidly, forcing the Sri Lankan batters into increasingly risky strokes.

The star with the ball was Freya Kemp. Bowling with pace, accuracy and intelligence, she ripped through the middle order to claim a career-best four-wicket haul. Every time Sri Lanka attempted a recovery, Kemp produced another breakthrough to keep England firmly in command.

England's fielding was equally sharp. Wyatt-Hodge capped her memorable evening with a superb catch to dismiss Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu, while the rest of the fielding unit backed up the bowlers with energy and precision.

Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 132, falling 87 runs short of the target. The result handed England one of their most emphatic victories in World Cup cricket and provided the perfect start to their home campaign.
