England vs New Zealand, 3rd Test 2026 – New Zealand fail to capitalize on strong position in day 1

The series-deciding third Test at Trent Bridge has already produced two fascinating days of cricket, with New Zealand dominating the opening day before England hit back strongly on Day 2 to leave the contest finely balanced.

Day 1: Latham and Conway put New Zealand in command

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, New Zealand's opening pair produced one of the finest partnerships by Kiwi batters in England. Captain Tom Latham compiled a superb 151, while Devon Conway struck a magnificent 157. Together they added 317 runs for the first wicket, the highest opening partnership by New Zealand in England, completely neutralising England's bowling attack on a flat Trent Bridge surface.

England's bowlers toiled throughout a hot opening day, with chances proving scarce. Conway's elegant strokeplay and Latham's patience allowed New Zealand to dictate proceedings from the outset. The hosts finally found some relief late in the day as 2 quick wickets of Ravindra & Nicholls fell in the evening session, but New Zealand still finished in a commanding position at 361/4.

Day 2: Stokes sparks turnaround

New Zealand resumed on 361/4 and looked set for a score well beyond 500. However, England captain Ben Stokes produced a decisive spell that transformed the match. Bowling with aggression and control, Stokes claimed 4/70 and triggered a collapse that saw New Zealand lose their last six wickets for only 77 runs. The tourists were eventually dismissed for 438.

Among the lower-order contributions, nightwatchman Will O'Rourke frustrated England with a career-best effort, adding valuable runs and helping push the total beyond 430.

England's explosive response

England's reply began badly when opener Emilio Gay fell without scoring. At 8/1, New Zealand sensed an opportunity to tighten their grip on the match. Instead, Ben Duckett produced one of the innings of the summer.

Duckett attacked from the outset, racing to a century from just 88 balls before eventually being dismissed for a dazzling 113 from 99 deliveries, containing 18 boundaries. It was his first Test hundred in almost a year and one of England's fastest Test centuries.

Supporting him brilliantly was young left-hander Jacob Bethell, who displayed maturity beyond his years. Bethell finished the day unbeaten on 74, registering his maiden Test fifty, while Joe Root remained not out on 21. Duckett and Bethell shared a superb 179-run partnership for the second wicket, dragging England firmly back into the contest.

Position at Stumps, Day 2

New Zealand: 438 all out

England: 223/2 in 45 overs

Ben Duckett – 113 (99)

Jacob Bethell – 74* (128)

Joe Root – 21* (42)

Ben Stokes – 4/70

England trail by 215 runs with eight first-innings wickets remaining, making Day 3 potentially the decisive day of the match. After New Zealand's dominance on Day 1, England's spirited fightback led by Stokes and Duckett has ensured the series decider remains wide open.
