FIFAWC26 : Morocco Frustrate Brazil, Scotland Triumph, Switzerland & Qatar draw , Australia Spring a Surprise

 

Day 3 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 featured four intriguing matches across Groups B, C and D. There was no shortage of drama as Switzerland and Qatar fought out an entertaining draw, Morocco once again demonstrated their credentials against football royalty Brazil, Scotland celebrated a long-awaited World Cup victory, and Australia produced one of the tournament's first major upsets by defeating Turkey.

Switzerland 1-1 Qatar

Group B

The day's opening match saw hosts Qatar earn a valuable point against European challengers Switzerland in a contest that swung dramatically from one side to the other.

Switzerland controlled possession during the opening half and looked the more composed side. Their midfield trio dictated the tempo, while the attacking movement of Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye repeatedly stretched the Qatari defence.

The Swiss breakthrough arrived shortly before half-time. After a sustained spell of pressure, a clever passing move opened space inside the penalty area and Switzerland converted clinically to take a deserved lead. Their superior ball retention and territorial dominance suggested they were on course for all three points.

Qatar, however, emerged from the interval with renewed energy. Inspired by the crowd, they pressed higher up the pitch and attacked with greater purpose. Akram Afif became increasingly influential, drifting into dangerous areas and creating opportunities for his teammates.

The equaliser finally arrived in the second half when Qatar capitalised on a defensive lapse to level the scores at 1-1. The brilliant headed goal transformed the atmosphere and gave the hosts fresh belief. Switzerland pushed for a winner during the closing stages, but Qatar's defence stood firm under considerable pressure.

The draw leaves Group B finely balanced. Switzerland will be disappointed not to have converted their territorial dominance into victory, while Qatar can take immense encouragement from the character they showed after falling behind. A point against strong European opposition could prove significant in the race for qualification.

Morocco 1-1 Brazil

Group C

One of the most eagerly awaited fixtures of the opening round produced a fascinating tactical battle as Morocco held five-time world champions Brazil.

Morocco started confidently and showed no fear against one of football's traditional giants. Their pressing game disrupted Brazil's rhythm and forced several turnovers in midfield.

The North Africans took a deserved lead in the 21st minute through Ismael Saibari. The PSV Eindhoven midfielder completed a flowing attacking move with a composed finish after Morocco sliced through the Brazilian defence. The goal was reward for an excellent opening spell during which Morocco looked the more dangerous side. 

Brazil's response came from individual brilliance. In the 32nd minute, Vinícius Júnior collected possession on the left wing, drifted inside and curled a magnificent shot beyond Yassine Bounou into the far corner. It was a world-class finish and one of the standout goals of the tournament so far. 

The second half remained evenly contested. Morocco's defence, marshalled superbly by Nayef Aguerd and Achraf Hakimi, limited Brazil's attacking stars to very few clear chances. Meanwhile, Morocco remained dangerous on the counterattack and came close to regaining the lead on several occasions.

Match Analysis

Morocco once again demonstrated why they are now considered one of the strongest teams outside Europe's traditional elite. Brazil enjoyed more possession but struggled to create chances against Morocco's disciplined structure. Both teams will remain confident of progressing from Group C.

Scotland 1-0 Haiti

Group C

Scotland's return to the World Cup stage after nearly three decades ended in celebration as they edged past a spirited Haiti side.

The Scots enjoyed the majority of possession from the outset, with Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour controlling midfield. Haiti, however, defended compactly and looked threatening whenever they broke forward through their quick attackers.

The decisive goal arrived midway through the second half. A well-worked Scottish move carved open the Haitian defence and the finish was applied confidently to give Scotland a precious lead.

The final twenty minutes were tense. Haiti pushed numbers forward in search of an equaliser and forced several dangerous situations inside the Scottish penalty area. Goalkeeper Angus Gunn produced a series of assured interventions, while defenders Kieran Tierney and John Souttar repeatedly cleared their lines.

Match Analysis

Scotland's victory was built on discipline rather than flair. Steve Clarke's side controlled key phases of the game and defended resolutely when Haiti mounted late pressure. The result leaves Scotland well positioned ahead of a crucial clash with Morocco.

Australia 2-0 Turkey

Group D

Australia produced the biggest surprise of Day 3 with a superbly organised performance against a highly fancied Turkish side.

Turkey dominated possession from the opening whistle, finishing the match with nearly 78% of the ball and registering close to 30 attempts on goal. Yet Australia defended with extraordinary discipline and punished their opponents whenever opportunities arose. 

The breakthrough came in the 27th minute. Midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler won possession deep inside his own half before releasing Nestory Irankunda on the counterattack. The young winger surged clear of the Turkish defence and calmly slotted home Australia's opening goal. 

Turkey responded by launching wave after wave of attacks. Arda Güler, Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Kerem Aktürkoğlu all tested goalkeeper Patrick Beach, but the Australian keeper was in sensational form. Beach made eight saves during the match, several of them of the highest quality. 

The decisive second goal arrived in the 75th minute. Connor Metcalfe collected possession inside his own half, drove forward and unleashed a magnificent strike from distance that flew into the top corner. It was a goal worthy of winning any match and effectively ended Turkish hopes of a comeback.

Match Analysis

This was a textbook example of effective counterattacking football. Turkey dominated possession, shots and territory, but Australia excelled in the two areas that mattered most: defending their own penalty area and taking their chances. Patrick Beach's goalkeeping heroics and Australia's clinical finishing made this one of the standout performances of the opening week.

Day 3 Verdict

Day 3 belonged to teams that combined discipline with belief. Qatar earned a hard-fought point against Switzerland, Morocco once again proved they can compete with football's elite, Scotland celebrated a memorable victory on their World Cup return, and Australia produced the shock of the day with a brilliantly executed win over Turkey. While Vinícius Júnior's wonder goal and Saibari's strike lit up the Brazil–Morocco clash, Patrick Beach's goalkeeping masterclass and Australia's ruthless efficiency may ultimately be remembered as the defining performance of the day.
