India Thrash Afghanistan by an Innings and 300 Runs in Historic biggest ever win in Chandigarh Test
India produced a clinical all-round display to register the biggest victory in their Test history, crushing Afghanistan by an innings and 300 runs in the one-off Test at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. The match lasted just three days as the hosts outclassed Afghanistan in every department.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, India laid the foundation for victory through a dominant batting performance. Captain Shubman Gill led from the front with a superb 126 off 177 balls, striking 14 fours and a six. Vice-captain KL Rahul matched his skipper's effort with a patient 100 but Jaiswal(24) missed out , while Sai Sudharsan continued his impressive rise with a fluent 81. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant entertained the crowd with a brisk 81, and Washington Sundar remained unbeaten on 52 as India declared at a commanding 564 for 8.
Afghanistan's most successful bowler was Mohammad Saleem, who fought tirelessly to claim 6 for 140 from 27 overs despite receiving little support from the rest of the attack.
Facing a mountain of runs, Afghanistan struggled from the outset in their first innings. Debutant left-arm spinner Manav Suthar immediately made his mark in Test cricket, extracting turn and bounce to run through the batting order. The visitors were eventually bowled out for 152 in 58.4 overs, with Rahmat Shah standing tall amid the collapse with a gritty 60 off 135 deliveries. No other Afghan batter managed to make a substantial contribution as wickets fell regularly. Suthar finished with outstanding figures of 6 for 33 from 22 overs, earning widespread praise for one of the finest bowling performances by an Indian debutant.
Trailing by 412 runs, Afghanistan were asked to follow on. The second innings brought little respite as India's spinners tightened their grip on the contest. Washington Sundar bowled with remarkable control and accuracy, returning figures of 4 for 36, while Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with 3 for 30. Afghanistan's batting once again failed to cope with the relentless pressure and were dismissed for only 112 in 35.5 overs. Sharafuddin Ashraf was unable to bat because of a quadriceps injury, further compounding Afghanistan's problems.
The emphatic victory highlighted India's depth in both batting and bowling. Gill's century, valuable contributions from Rahul, Sudharsan, Pant and Sundar, and the dream debut of Manav Suthar combined to produce a thoroughly one-sided contest. Suthar deservedly named Player of the Match after claiming six wickets in the first innings and playing a pivotal role in India's record-breaking triumph.
