FIFAWC26: Mexico qualifies for next round , Big wins for Switzerland, Canada

Day 8 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered an action-packed slate of Matchday 2 fixtures for Groups A and B. It was a day marked by clinical finishing, historic milestones, and a major breakthrough as co-hosts Mexico secured the first official ticket to the Round of 32.

Match Reports & Goal Descriptions

Czechia 1 – 1 South Africa

In an emotionally charged Group A encounter at the Atlanta Stadium, both sides fought relentlessly for their first points of the tournament. The match also etched itself into World Cup history as the first time two opposing managers over the age of 70 (Czechia's Miroslav Koubek and South Africa's Hugo Broos, both 74) squared off.

Goal 1 (Czechia, 6'): The European side took an early lead following a swift offensive buildup. Michal Sadílek struck a clean, regular goal into the back of the net to put Czechia up 1–0, a lead they defended for the vast majority of the game.

Goal 2 (South Africa, 83'): Desperate to stay alive in the group, Bafana Bafana mounted an intense late charge. South Africa was awarded a penalty in the 83rd minute, which was subsequently checked and confirmed by VAR. Teboho Mokoena coolly converted the spot-kick, burying it past the goalkeeper to rescue a vital point for his country.

Switzerland 4 – 1 Bosnia and Herzegovina

In Los Angeles, fans witnessed one of the most unique scoring anomalies in World Cup history. After a gritty, deadlocked opening 70 minutes where defenses completely ruled the pitch, the game erupted into a chaotic, late offensive explosion. It became the first match in tournament history to feature five goals with every single one of them arriving after the 70th minute.

Goal Breakdown: The Swiss frontline completely unlocked the Bosnian backline after the 74th minute. The star of the show was 20-year-old forward Johan Manzambi, who came off the bench to score a sensational brace. At 20 years and 247 days old, Manzambi wrote his name in the record books as the youngest Swiss player ever to score two goals in a single World Cup match. Bosnia managed a lone consolidation goal amidst the Swiss onslaught, but the late blitz firmly sealed a 4–1 victory for Switzerland.

Canada 6 – 0 Qatar

Co-hosts Canada absolutely ignited BC Place in Vancouver, treating the home crowd to a historic 6–0 masterclass against former Asian champions Qatar. The Canadians became the first host nation to score six goals in a single World Cup match since Argentina blanked Peru 6–0 back in 1978. Conversely, it was a disciplinary disaster for Qatar, who became the first Asian side to receive two red cards in a single World Cup fixture, heavily compromising their shape in the 33rd and 53rd minutes.

The Jonathan David Show: Juventus forward Jonathan David spearheaded the rout, bagging the second hat-trick of the 2026 World Cup. With his clinical finishing, David became the first North American male player to score a World Cup hat-trick since the USA's Bert Patenaude accomplished the feat all the way back in 1930. The co-hosts capitalized heavily on their numerical advantage, adding three more goals through a dominant attacking display to round out the 6–0 scoreline.

Mexico  1-0 South Korea

Co-hosts Mexico became the first team to book a place in the knockout Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026™ after securing a hard-fought 1–0 victory over South Korea in front of a passionate home crowd at the Guadalajara Stadium (Estadio Akron).

The Breakthrough (50'): Following a cagey and scoreless first half that drew some jeers from the local supporters, Mexico capitalized on a costly defensive mix-up early in the second half. South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu collided with defender Lee Gi-hyuk while attempting to intercept a routine aerial ball, allowing Mexican midfielder Luis Romo to pounce on the loose ball and calmly slot it into an empty net.

The Defensive Stand (87'): South Korea pressed aggressively for an equalizer late in the game. Their best opportunity came in the dying minutes when substitute Cho Gue-sung connected with a powerful close-range header, but Mexican goalkeeper Raúl Rangel executed a stunning reflex double-save to deny both the initial header and Yang Hyun-jun's follow-up attempt on the rebound, preserving the clean sheet.
