England beat New Zealand by 115 runs for emphatic Lord's victory & lead series 1-0

England completed a convincing 115-run victory over New Zealand on the fourth morning of the opening Crowe–Thorpe Trophy Test at Lord's, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. On a challenging surface that consistently troubled batters, England's seamers proved too potent, with Ollie Robinson and Gus Atkinson spearheading the home side's charge.

Day 3: New Zealand dented further

After both teams had struggled against the lively pitch, England determined to build a defendable target. Young opener Emilio Gay displayed remarkable composure, compiling a gritty half-century that became one of the few substantial innings of the match. Captain Ben Stokes provided valuable support as England gradually extended their lead despite New Zealand's disciplined bowling.

England's second innings eventually ended with the hosts setting New Zealand a target of 254 runs. Given the erratic bounce and pronounced seam movement, the chase always appeared a formidable challenge. England's bowlers immediately seized control leaving New Zealand 36/3 at the end of day 2 . On a rain drenched day 3 England reducing the visitors to 55 for 5 by stumps. Atkinson & other english quicks ripped through the top order with a devastating spell, leaving New Zealand staring at defeat.

Day 4: Atkinson completes the job

Resuming on the fourth morning, New Zealand required a miracle. Devon Conway and Glenn Phillips offered spirited resistance, adding a fighting partnership that briefly delayed the inevitable. Phillips battled admirably for an unbeaten 44, while Conway attempted to anchor the innings.

However, England never relinquished control. Gus Atkinson produced a superb spell, claiming a five-wicket haul and dismantling the lower order. New Zealand were eventually bowled out for 138, handing England a comprehensive 115-run triumph before lunch on Day 4.

Robinson's dream return

The match marked a memorable comeback for Ollie Robinson, whose incisive bowling earned him the Player of the Match award. His crucial breakthroughs on Day 3 laid the foundation for England's victory, while Atkinson's excellence at Lord's ensured the finish was swift and decisive.

Pitch dominates discussion

Despite England's impressive win, much of the post-match discussion centred on the Lord's pitch. Unpredictable bounce and excessive movement made batting exceptionally difficult throughout the contest, leading to a remarkably short Test match. The surface drew criticism from both camps, and the Marylebone Cricket Club later acknowledged that the pitch had fallen below expected standards.

England will nevertheless be delighted with the result, beginning their home summer and World Test Championship campaign in style, while New Zealand must regroup quickly ahead of the second Test.
