Mexico and South Korea Make Winning Starts as FIFA World Cup 2026 Kicks Off in Style
The FIFA World Cup 2026 began with drama, emotion, and plenty of excitement as hosts Mexico and South Korea secured impressive victories on the opening day of football's grandest spectacle.
Mexico 2-0 South Africa: Hosts Shine at the Historic Azteca
Forty years after Diego Maradona's legendary Argentina lifted the World Cup trophy at the iconic Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, the famous arena once again played host to a memorable World Cup occasion. Roared on by more than 110,000 passionate supporters, Mexico made a dream start to their home campaign with a commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa.
The result carried an added sense of satisfaction for the hosts, who had been held by the same opponents in the opening match of the 2010 World Cup. This time, Javier Aguirre's men left no room for disappointment, dominating proceedings and delivering a performance worthy of the occasion.
Mexico struck early in the ninth minute through Julian Quiñones. South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams attempted a pass to a defender near the edge of the penalty area, but Mexico midfielder Erik Lira intercepted the ball and immediately set up Quiñones. The in-form winger, who arrived at the World Cup fresh from winning the Saudi Pro League Golden Boot ahead of stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Ivan Toney, calmly slotted his effort through the goalkeeper's legs to open the scoring.
Quiñones nearly doubled the lead before halftime, only to see a powerful effort crash against the post as Mexico continued to dictate the tempo.
The hosts finally secured breathing space in the 67th minute. Roberto Alvarado delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, and veteran striker Raúl Jiménez rose magnificently to head home Mexico's second goal.
The strike carried special significance for Jiménez, who suffered a life-threatening skull fracture while playing club football five years ago. Many feared he might never return to the game, yet the striker completed one of football's most remarkable comebacks. Still wearing a protective headband, he fittingly sealed the victory with a trademark header.
However, the match will also be remembered for the controversial officiating of Brazilian referee Wilton Pereira. Three players were shown red cards in a fiery encounter.
South Africa's Yaya Sithole was dismissed in the 49th minute for a reckless challenge near the penalty area. His teammate Themba Zwane followed in the 82nd minute after a confrontation with an opponent. Pereira initially issued a yellow card before upgrading it to a red following a VAR review. Mexico defender César Montes also received his marching orders after bringing down an opponent near the edge of the box.
The referee further handed out three yellow cards in a match packed with intensity, controversy and emotion, ensuring the tournament got off to a dramatic start.
South Korea 2-1 Czechia: Asian Giants Produce Stirring Comeback
The second match of the tournament delivered another thrilling contest as South Korea fought back from behind to defeat Czechia 2-1 in a pulsating encounter.
Although the first half lacked goals, it was far from short on action. South Korea dominated possession and territory from the outset, creating a series of promising opportunities through the energetic midfield duo of Hwang and Lee. Free-kicks, corners and dangerous attacks kept the Czech defence under constant pressure.
Having weathered the early storm, Czechia gradually found their footing and began threatening on the counterattack. Pavel Šulc was among those who came close, but neither side managed to break the deadlock before halftime.
The second half proved far more entertaining. South Korea emerged with renewed attacking intent but repeatedly squandered excellent opportunities, leading to growing frustration among their players.
Against the run of play, Czechia took the lead in the 59th minute. A brilliantly executed long throw caused chaos inside the penalty area, and Ladislav Krejčí glanced a header into the net to stun the Korean supporters.
Rather than being discouraged, the goal sparked an even stronger response from South Korea. Their persistence finally paid off in the 67th minute when Hwang produced a superb finish beyond the outstretched fingertips of the Czech goalkeeper to level the scores.
With momentum firmly on their side, the Koreans continued to press forward in search of a winner. Their reward arrived in the 80th minute when Ha-yeon unleashed a decisive strike that found the back of the net and completed a remarkable comeback.
At the final whistle, emotional South Korean players celebrated a hard-earned victory, some shedding tears of joy after securing three valuable points.
Opening Day Standings
After an enthralling first day of action, Mexico and South Korea sit atop Group A with three points each, while South Africa and Czechia will look to bounce back in their next fixtures.
If the opening day is any indication, the FIFA World Cup 2026 promises to deliver a month of unforgettable football, dramatic twists and unforgettable moments.
