Capsey and Knight Script Stunning Turnaround as England women Clinch Series v India in Taunton Thriller
England Women overcame an early collapse and produced a sensational batting display to defeat India Women by six wickets in the third and final T20I at Taunton, sealing the series 2-1. Chasing a challenging target of 181, the hosts recovered from a precarious position to reach 184/4 with nine balls to spare, thanks to a magnificent partnership between Alice Capsey and Heather Knight.
After being asked to bat first, India Women suffered an early setback when Smriti Mandhana was trapped lbw by Charlie Dean for 8 off 9 balls. The aggressive Shafali Verma attempted to seize the initiative with a brisk 11 off just 6 deliveries, but her dismissal left India under pressure during the powerplay.
With the top order struggling to establish itself, Yastika Bhatia played a sparkling counterattacking innings that transformed the momentum. The elegant left-hander struck a fluent 32 off just 18 balls, peppering the boundary rope with seven exquisite fours. Her fearless strokeplay and superb timing ensured that India did not allow England to dictate terms after the early breakthroughs.
Yastika found excellent support from Jemimah Rodrigues, who continued her impressive form with a stylish 29 off 19 deliveries. Jemimah's innings was marked by her trademark wristy flicks, deft placements and clever manipulation of the field. Together, the duo steadied the innings while maintaining an impressive scoring rate, rebuilding after the early setbacks and laying a solid platform for the middle order.
The foundation laid by Yastika and Jemimah allowed captain Harmanpreet Kaur to take charge. Producing a masterclass in pacing an innings, the Indian skipper remained unbeaten on 56 from 40 deliveries, striking seven boundaries in a knock that combined composure, experience and controlled aggression. Harmanpreet rotated the strike expertly before unleashing a series of authoritative strokes in the latter stages of the innings.
Deepti Sharma played the perfect supporting role with a valuable 32 off 24 balls. Her enterprising knock kept the scoreboard moving and complemented Harmanpreet's innings beautifully. The pair added crucial runs during the death overs, while Richa Ghosh's unbeaten 6 from 4 balls provided the finishing touches as India posted an imposing 180/5 from their 20 overs.
The visitors appeared to have seized control when their bowlers made early inroads into England's chase. The hosts slumped to 38/3, with India capitalizing on the pressure through disciplined bowling and sharp fielding. At that stage, England's hopes of chasing down the target appeared increasingly difficult.
However, what followed was one of the finest partnerships of the series.
Alice Capsey produced a breathtaking innings full of confidence, flair and fearless strokeplay. The young all-rounder launched a stunning counterattack, dispatching both pace and spin with remarkable ease. Her dazzling 82 from just 50 deliveries featured a wide array of strokes and shifted the momentum decisively in England's favour.
At the other end, captain Heather Knight anchored the chase magnificently. Calm under pressure and rich in experience, Knight played an innings of immense class and maturity. She accelerated brilliantly as the innings progressed, remaining unbeaten on 70 while registering one of the fastest half-centuries of her T20I career.
Together, Capsey and Knight forged a match-winning partnership of 129 runs for the fourth wicket. Their outstanding understanding, intelligent running between the wickets and relentless boundary-hitting gradually wore down the Indian bowling attack. Every time India sought a breakthrough, the pair responded with positive and authoritative cricket.
Despite India's spirited efforts, the crucial wicket never arrived. England maintained control throughout the latter stages of the chase and eventually crossed the finish line with nine balls remaining to complete a memorable victory.
Capsey was deservedly named Player of the Match for her sensational 82, while her consistency and impact throughout the series earned her the Player of the Series award as well.
Although India finished on the losing side, there were several positives for the visitors. Yastika Bhatia's fearless counterattack, Jemimah Rodrigues' fluent strokeplay, Harmanpreet Kaur's captain's knock and Deepti Sharma's valuable contribution highlighted the depth and resilience of India's batting unit. Ultimately, however, the extraordinary partnership between Capsey and Knight proved decisive in a thrilling series decider.
