2026 ICC Women's T20 World Cup: South Africa outplayed India , West Indies humiliate Sri Lanka

The group stages of the 2026 ICC Women's T20 World Cup ignited with a double-header of dramatic, narrative-shifting action. In the afternoon fixture, a bowling masterclass helped the West Indies easily dismantle Sri Lanka's line-up to register a crucial 5-wicket victory. Later in the evening, Old Trafford bore witness to a thrilling blockbuster where a clinical batting display from South Africa dramatically outpaced India, reshaping the tournament's knockout race.

West Indies vs Sri Lanka (Match 17)

Hayley Matthews' Spell Dictates Terms for the Windies

The West Indies put on a defensive bowling clinic at Gloucestershire, securing a comfortable 5-wicket win over Sri Lanka. Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, the Windies completely choked out the Sri Lankan top order. Skipper Hayley Matthews turned in a flawless, player-of-the-match performance, conceding just 15 runs in her 4 overs while plucking 3 crucial wickets (3/15). Karishma Ramharack offered perfect tandem support with a stingy 2/15. Sri Lanka struggled heavily to construct any momentum, getting bowled out for a meager 98 runs in 19.4 overs. Middle-order batter Nilakshi de Silva provided the lone resistance, anchoring her team with a fighting 30 off 26 balls.

Chasing a modest 99, the West Indies stayed patient and methodical. Experienced opener Stafanie Taylor anchored the chase with a solid 27 off 25 deliveries, which included a crisp boundary and a definitive six. Though Sri Lankan spinner Kavisha Dilhari put up a spirited fight to cause a brief middle-order flutter with her 2/22 spell, the target simply lacked the cushion required to induce panic. The West Indies crossed the line at 99/5 in 16.1 overs, closing out the game with 23 balls to spare.

South Africa vs India (Match 18)

Marizanne Kapp's Fireworks Power Proteas Past India's 158

A packed Old Trafford was treated to a spectacular, high-scoring contest as South Africa pulled off a brilliantly calculated chase to defeat India by 6 wickets. Winning a critical toss, India confidently chose to bat first and built an imposing foundation. Openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana went to work early; Verma took the aggressive route, blasting 31 off just 15 balls at a rapid strike rate of 206.67, laced with 4 fours and a towering six. Mandhana added a brisk 17 off 12 balls. Yastika(15) had her promising innings cut short while Jemima (14) struggled. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur anchored the middle overs with a steady 24 off 22 balls. Contributions from Deepti Sharma (21 off 21) and a late cameo from Richa Ghosh (15 off 14) pushed India to a highly competitive 158/7 in their 20 overs. For South Africa, veteran Marizanne Kapp was the pick of the bowlers with smart figures of 2/27 in her 4 overs.

South Africa's response was slow at the start .Openers Laura Wolvaardt (20 off 21 balls) didnt stay long putting pressure on the middle order .  Tazmin Brits anchored  beautifully to score a vital 40 off 36 balls (including 2 fours and a six). However, it was Marizanne Kapp who stole the show and completely took the game away from India. Walking in with intent, Kapp played a blistering, unblemished knock of 81* off just 45 deliveries. Striking at an outstanding 180.00, she dismantled the Indian bowling attack with 7 boundaries and 4 massive sixes.

India's bowling unit struggled heavily under the pressure of Kapp's onslaught. While spinner Shree Charani bowled an exceptional, lone-warrior spell of 3/24 across her 4 overs—including a rare maiden—the rest of the attack lacked control. Deepti Sharma went wicketless, leaking 44 runs in her 4 overs, while Prema Rawat gave away 21 runs in just 2 overs. Kapp's clinical edge ensured South Africa safely reached 161/4 with 5 balls remaining (19.1 overs), registering a massive win that throws Group A wide open.
