Womens T20I World Cup26 : England overcome West Indies challenge to qualify for semis

England Women booked their place in the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with an impressive 38-run victory over West Indies Women at Lord’s on 24 June. In a high-stakes Group B encounter between two previously unbeaten teams, the hosts produced a complete performance with both bat and ball to continue their unbeaten run in the tournament.

Batting first, England recovered from a couple of early setbacks through the brilliance of Danni Wyatt-Hodge. The experienced opener played a match-defining innings of 65 from 42 balls, striking boundaries all around the ground and keeping the scoreboard moving despite the intense heat. She was well supported by Heather Knight, whose fluent 43 helped England maintain momentum through the middle overs. Useful late contributions, including some aggressive hitting from stand-in captain Charlie Dean, lifted England to a formidable 186/7, the highest women's T20 international total recorded at Lord’s.

West Indies faced a daunting chase and suffered an early blow when captain Hayley Matthews was dismissed amid controversy following a television review. England's spin attack then tightened its grip on the contest, with Charlie Dean and Sophie Ecclestone striking at crucial moments to reduce the Caribbean side to 71/4. Despite several dropped catches and fielding lapses from England, West Indies never managed to sustain the required scoring rate.

The visitors showed resistance through a fighting half-century from Zaida James Henry, who scored 51 runs and attempted to keep the chase alive. However, wickets at regular intervals and disciplined bowling from England ensured the target remained out of reach. West Indies eventually closed on 148/5 from their 20 overs, falling 38 runs short.

Wyatt-Hodge was deservedly named Player of the Match for her commanding 65, an innings that further strengthened her position among the tournament's leading run-scorers. England's victory secured a semi-final berth with a group match still to play, underlining their status as one of the strongest contenders for the title. West Indies, meanwhile, remain in contention but now face a must-win final group game against Ireland to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
